Top leader insists Iran not seeking nuclear arms

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's top leader insisted on Wednesday that his country is not seeking nuclear weapons, saying that holding such arms is a sin as well as "useless, harmful and dangerous"

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei spoke after meetings with Iranian nuclear scientists and officials. He did not mention a visit this week to Iran by the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

The International Atomic Energy Agency team left Tehran on Tuesday without finding any way forward in attempts to persuade Iran to talk about suspected secret work on atomic arms.

The West accuses Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies the charges, saying its program is peaceful and geared toward generating electricity and producing radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

In remarks broadcast on state TV, Khamenei said atomic weapons don't bring power but that Iran's achievements in nuclear technology — including proficiency in the nuclear fuel cycle from extracting uranium ore to producing nuclear fuel — have brought dignity and pride to the nation.

Khamenei, who has final say on all state matter in Iran, also said that Western powers know "we are not seeking nuclear weapons because the Islamic Republic of Iran considers possession of nuclear weapons a sin ... and believes that holding such weapons is useless, harmful and dangerous."

"The Islamic Republic of Iran wants to prove to the world that possessing nuclear weapons does not bring power and that might doesn't come from atomic weapons. Might based on nuclear weapons can be defeated and the Iranian nation will do this," he said.

These events are tragic. Iran is a beautiful land with a rich history and many good people. Unfortunately, its leaders are taking it to war because of a blind hatred they have for Israel. Their rhetoric makes it sound like they are ready, but the Israeli air force is much more capable than Iran's air defenses. Also, every country in the region, including the Saudis and the Turks want to see Iran's nuclear development ended. While they might give lip service to protesting an Israeli strike, they will support it. The result will be a disaster for the Iranian people if Iran continues its nuclear weapon development. I pray that the Iranian leadership will behave maturely for the sake of my many Iranian friends.

Irans gripe is Israeli illegal settlements. Israel says Iran is arming the people fighting Israeli illegal settlements. Well the fact is Israel settlements are illegal. Israel signed the Geneva convention so did we (USA). Israeli settlements are a violation of the 4th geneva convention.
Israel has nukes without being inspected. Israel is guilty of war crimes and starting wars. If you lived in Iran and Israel was next to you stealing land and starting wars you would want a way to defend yourself too. Get Israel to start obeying international law. then talk. Without that why would anyone leave there self open to attack with a war crime state like Israel next door.

What about the ABM treaty America broke and subsequently withdrew from. There are tons of #$%$ treaties and organizations in the world. Look at the UN. We never ask for UN approval before we go to war.
      • balls 3 mths ago
The Geneva convention itself is a crime. It is not fair to hold yourself to a standard in warfare that the enemy is not willing to subject himself to. Is it wrong to use napalm if the enemy is using napalm. I don't believe so but under the geneva convention it would. Is it wrong to bomb civilian locales if the enemy is dressed as a civilian? It is against the geneva convention but in this case also against common wisdom. There are rules sure, but if other parties fail to obide by them than what wisdom lies in sticking by the rules that other fail to follow. That is the problem america is facing. We are not fighting a conventional enemy. We are not fighting an enemy that plays by the rules of the Geneva Convention and so therefor we too should not fight by the rules of the Geneva Convention.

Chris you (!) read this if you can read..Thanks to Rich..The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called 'hypocrites' and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.

Unlike nearly all of the Old Testament verses of violence, most of the verses of violence in the Quran are open-ended, meaning that they are not restrained by the historical context of the surrounding text. They are part of the eternal, unchanging word of Allah, and just as relevant or subjective as anything else in the Quran.

Unfortunately, there are very few verses of tolerance and peace to abrogate or even balance out the many that call for nonbelievers to be fought and subdued until they either accept humiliation, convert to Islam, or are killed. Muhammad's own martial legacy and the remarkable stress on violence found in the Quran have resulted in a trail of blood and tears across world history.

Other than the fact that Muslims haven't killed every non-Muslim under their domain, there is very little else that they can point to as proof that theirs is a peaceful, tolerant religion. Where Islam is dominant (as in the Middle East and Pakistan) religious minorities suffer brutal persecution with little resistance. Where Islam is in the minority (as in Thailand, the Philippines and Europe) there is the threat of violence if Muslim demands are not met. Either situation seems to provide a justification for religious terrorism, which is persistent and endemic to Islamic fundamentalism.

The reasons are obvious and begin with the Quran. Few verses of Islam's most sacred text can be construed to fit the contemporary virtues of religious tolerance and universal brotherhood. Those that do are earlier "Meccan" verses which are obviously abrogated by later ones. This is why Muslim apologists speak of the "risks" of trying to interpret the Quran without their "assistance" - even while claiming that it is a perfect book.

Far from being mere history or theological construct, the violent verses of the Quran have played a key role in very real massacre and genocide.

Muhammad's failure to leave a clear line of succession resulted in perpetual internal war following his death. Those who knew him best first fought to keep remote tribes from leaving Islam and reverting to their preferred religion (the Ridda or 'Apostasy wars'). Then, within the closer community, early Meccan converts battled later ones. Hostility developed between those immigrants who had traveled with Muhammad to Mecca and the Ansar at Medina who had helped them settle in. Finally there was a violent struggle within Muhammad's own family between his favorite wife and favorite daughter - a jagged schism that has left Shias and Sunnis at each others' throats to this day.

The strangest and most untrue thing that can be said about Islam is that it is a Religion of Peace. If every standard by which the West is judged and condemned (slavery, imperialism, intolerance, misogyny, sexual repression, warfare...) were applied equally to Islam, the verdict would be devastating. Islam never gives up what it conquers, be it religion, culture, language or life. Neither does it make apologies or any real effort at moral progress. It is the least open to dialogue and the most self-absorbed. It is convinced of its own perfection, yet brutally shuns self-examination and represses criticism.

Well mister Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. If your country isn't trying to build nuclear weapons then why have you admitted to enriching uranium beyond the 4% needed to make nuclear fuel rods? You folks have admitted to enriching uranium beyond 30% and the only reason to go beyond 4% is for NUCLEAR WEAPONS. Please explain what the heck you're doing if not trying to build nukes.........

Actually they are enriching to 19.75% which is the % needed for refueling the Tehran Research Reactor for medical isotopes.

Its useless to try convincing the americans, because americans won't believe it, they brains are washed. So i suggest that iran really build the nuke weapons for competing israel who already have nukes.

Around the time Israel started the 6 day war we had much better relations with Iran. We helped Iran build a nuclear reactor and supplied Iran with weapon grade nuclear fuel to run it. Then Israel started a bunch of wars attacking everyone around it and our (USA) relations with Iran went bad. Iran is against israeli illegal settlements so Israel calls Iran a terrorist state. Figures we have a bunch of Zionist boot lickers in congress and senate trading AIPAC support in elections for there getting America to back Israel despite Israel is a war crime state stealing Arab land. That's the bottom line for us in mid eat conflict. Were backing a country breaking international law stealing land. no way past that that is a fact.

This creep moved in next door to me and keeps pushing the boundary line between our lands further into my back yard taking my land. When ever I try to get him to stop he says it’s gods will. I went to the authorities to try to get them to stop him from stealing from me but they cant seem to stop him. They say he is wrong and breaking the law but they won’t stop him.
If I do anything that looks like i’m building a way to force him to stop he says i’m a threat to him and the world should try to starve me and force me to change my ways.
His friends attacked my neighbor down the street over some lies about him having some weapons he never had.

Bottom line the law should be our guide in mid east policy not AIPAC.

Our problem is we have elected a bunch of people willing to back Israeli crime. Israel did start the 6 day war as a way to steal land. It's simple to prove just read up on the 6 day war. Israel keeps stealing Palestine land, That is Iran's conflict with Israel, Israelis the one breaking international law not Iran. But we elect people willing to back Israeli crime. We need to use law as our guide in mid east policy not AIPAC the Israeli lobby.
