Sheldon Dorf, Who Founded the World Famous Comic-Con International Comic Book Convention, Died of Kidney Failure

Comic fans everywhere are mourning the loss of Sheldon "Shel" Dorf, 76, the founder of San Diego's largest convention Comic Con. Dorf died Tuesday at Sharp Memorial Hospital of complications from diabetes. He was buried Wednesday at the Home of Peace Cemetery in Mount Hope. Dorf's brother Michael said he would miss most his brother's big, generous heart.

As a child, Dorf was an avid comic reader and collector. The first convention drew 300 people in 1970. More than 125,000 attended this year's edition of the pop-culture showcase. Shel Dorf, a prominent comic-book collector, was the architect behind the pop-culture showcase in San Diego.
