Tornado hits fitness club, sending gym-goers scrambling [VIDEO]

A tornado touched down in Missouri on Saturday afternoon, damaging several homes and businesses and sending people inside a local gym scrambling for cover.

In dramatic video footage captured by Jeremy Lundgren, those inside Club Fitness in St. Peters, Mo., can be seen abandoning their weights as they were instructed to get away from the windows. After the tornado passed, gym-goers went outside to to see an awning torn off the front of the building, pulling bricks from the facade.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was estimated to be an EF-0 — the weakest rating possible — with estimated wind speeds between 75 mph and 80 mph. The small twister also caused damage to an Arby’s restaurant and a nearby apartment complex, where a stop sign was ripped from the ground and driven into the side of a home, KTVI said.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, organizers of a Shakespeare Festival stopped a performance of “Henry IV” due to a tornado warning. (They didn’t have enough time to complete it, the paper said, but planned to later Saturday night.)

No injuries were reported in the storm, St. Charles County officials said.

A representative for Club Fitness said they were assessing the damage to the building but hoped to reopen as early as Tuesday.
