Tornado season looms, but forecasting a challenge

WASHINGTON (AP) โ€” Tornado season is starting, but don't ask meteorologists how bad it will be this spring and summer.

They don't know. They're having a hard enough time getting a fix on the likely path of storms expected in the next 48 hours, from the Ohio Valley to the Southeast coast.

The very nature of tornadoes makes them the wildcard of weather disasters. It's just hard to figure when and where they'll appear.

On Wednesday night, one hit Rome, Ga., the National Weather Service said, with winds of 95 mph, leaving a 3-mile swath of destruction.

It's not the first one of the year. In January two people were killed by separate twisters in Alabama. Preliminary reports showed 95 tornadoes struck last month, compared with 16 in January 2011, a particularly stormy year.

The season usually starts in March and then ramps up for the next couple of months, but forecasting a seasonal outlook is even more imprecise than predicting hurricane seasons. Tornadoes are too small and too short-lived. They don't develop like blizzards and hurricanes, which are easier to project.

They pop in and pop out. The storms that give them birth may last only a few hours. Hurricanes and blizzards are lumbering beasts that spend days moving across the satellite maps. When a hurricane approaches, coastlines get days to evacuate. With a tornado, if the weather service can let people know 20 minutes in advance, it's considered a victory.

The deadly Joplin, Mo., tornado "wasn't violent until just about the time it got to the hospital," said Harold Brooks, a research scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Severe Storms Laboratory, in Norman, Okla. "Even when you're in the field, there are still times when you're surprised by the intensity of the event and how quickly it started."

The federal storm center says 158 died in that storm; local officials count 161.

If a forecast for a hurricane or blizzard is off by a mile, it's still bad weather. But a mile difference means no damage in a tornado, Brooks said: "It's so much finer in time and space on the tornado, it does make it a harder problem."

It takes a piece of debris only a few seconds to fly around an entire tornado; it takes hours to circle a hurricane. Yet tornadoes, though smaller, can have stronger winds. Since 1950, there have been 58 tornadoes in the United States with winds exceeding 200 mph; six last year alone. Only three hurricanes have made U.S. landfall with winds more than 155 mph.

And forecasters are telling the Southeast and Midwest to get ready again.

"It looks like this week we're moving into a slightly more active dynamic pattern," said warning meteorologist Greg Carbin at the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center, also in Norman, Okla.

The percolating Ohio Valley/Southeastern storm is proof of how hard meteorologists have it. On Tuesday evening, Carbin said, "We're kind of expecting it to be a fairly significant event" and the storm center's website had a small red swath for potential severe storms with tornadoes.

By Wednesday afternoon, the storm prediction center massively expanded its Thursday watch area to include 14 states from Florida to Indiana. By Thursday afternoon, it was down to mostly Kentucky and Tennessee with parts of neighboring states.

"A lot of things have to come together at once to have a tornadic storm and the skill at forecasting all those things is near zero," said Howard Bluestein, a professor at the University of Oklahoma. "They are definitely more unpredictable."

All this comes on the heels of one of the worst tornado years in U.S. history. Tornadoes in 2011 started the earliest ever โ€” New Year's Day โ€” killing 550 people, injuring 5,400 and causing $10 billion in damage over the year, the most in U.S. history. The 2011 season had the most tornadoes in a single day and a single month on record.

But if you ask tornado experts what that means for this year, they'll answer that they just don't know.

Some meteorologists mention La Nina, the flip side of El Nino, as an indicator. It's a cooling of the central Pacific Ocean. Scientists have noticed a correlation between strong La Ninas and active tornado seasons โ€” including last year. But it's not that simple or clear-cut, Columbia University professor Michael Tippett said. The current La Nina is weakening so much it shouldn't be a factor this year, several experts said.

Tippett has a new study that gives some hope, pointing out potential factors โ€” vertical wind shear, updraft and a type of rainfall โ€” that might help for long-range tornado forecasts.

Later this summer, meteorologists will meet in a special conference to try to figure out how to do that type of longer-term tornado prediction. And the National Weather Service is installing new radar for live forecasting, tracking and distinguishing of tornadoes that could save lives in real-time because forecasters can be more certain in their warnings, said National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Schlatter.

All those elements together mean that maybe by 2020 or so, meteorologists will be able to say watch out this season or relax a bit โ€” but not just yet, said federal researcher Brooks.

Joplin tornado survivor here; lost nearly everything but my loved ones. No pity here, I was adequately insured and have another house and replaced my vehicle. Bless the ones that weren't. The point of my comment? I am a fifty-three year old man who never feared the sky before: now I think I do.

I agree. There's a lot of fake bravado posters on these boards after any storm. They all act as if they'd of done something different, more intelligent or superior. But if you're stuck in traffic, in a trailer at 3:00 asleep and there's a Tornado heading right for you, you're going to poop your pants. One such guy bragging was an atheist. I directed him to the Videos on You Tube.."First Person video Joplin Tornado 5/22/11" The one where all those people were in the cooler and some kid filmed it. People weren't screaming out...OH Science! OH my SCIENCE!!, Darwin! save Me!....Darwin, Darwin, Darwin!" They mentioned a name his types hate. Anyone who has seen or had relatives hit by Tornadoes knows the truth and is better prepared now than the mockers. Got my Noaa radio and Police Scanners with Ham/Skywarn Freq's on them ready at all times.

Science is what brought you weather forecasts and doppler radar and all that, Cheesy - I don't get your point? Science is not in conflict with the notion of God unless people choose to extremely literally interpret the bible, which not all that many people do that. Those few will not do any better in the long run than the Catholic Church did with Galileo. I personally have lost my faith, but saying stuff like "Lord, help me!" or "Oh my God!" are everyday expressions and I use them even though I no longer believe.

My grandfather was terrified of tornadoes for many years, because a tornado hit the plant he was working at and he saw another worker crushed to death by heavy machinery thrown about by the tornado's winds.

One thing I'm certain of. If I see the Doppler On Wheels and its armada, and the TIV in my neighborhood, I am heading for the BASEMENT !
      • CheesyPoofNation. 3 mths ago
Agreed. If YOU see the TIV or "Eliminator" driving with a fleet of other vehicles....get to the nearest basement. It's sad how many people are unaware of the county right next door when warnings come out. They just go driving about as if the Weather to the west won't effect them.

I live in the south. We did not have a winter this year. Normally we get about 6 weeks where it gets around 40 in the day and 20's at night. Nothing this year but 6 days! My trees have leaves, my azaleas have bloomed, grass has been mowed 2 times so far this year. We dont have basements down south, sea level, but we get about 10 tornado warnings a month or more. No one down here pays attention to them cause they put them out so much. I grew up in tornado alley and feel very exposed here.
      • Nick Rigula 3 mths ago
with how warm this winters been i can only imagine how bad this summer will be. extreme heat and horrible storms. we all better brace ourselves now
      • alienbaby 3 mths ago
Im the opposite- grew up in Mississippi and now live in techincally "Tornado Alley"- feels weird without all the sirens going off all the time and when they do people don't act immediately because they give you like 10 mintues notice- that's unheard of in the south- i agree its very weird to switch between these two places
      • Kayt the Druid 2 mths ago
@ Theresa, would it be possible to reinforce a room in your house on ground level to act as a shelter ? Just wondering....

Joplin tornado survivor here also, lost it all and had to relocate/restart. But I thank
the Weather people for the 5 min. warning given, it saved my life.

I was in the Alabama tornado's and the weather service did a good job getting the info out

Good luck to you. I lived at 25th and Pennsylvania Ave. Wipe out.

My house doesnt have a basement. I have to drive 20 miles to my parents house for the nearest basement. I take no chances. If a bad storm system moves into the area.. i move out of the area before it gets here. Makes for some long nights sometimes and a lot of hours at the parents house( last spring i was thinking about moving in temporarily) but there is one thing i know for sure: If you get in a fight with a tornado, your not going to be on the winning side.

I had a similar story. We finally just dug a storm shelter in our back yard the only thing you can see from the ground is the hatch to open it. We store canned foods and batteries in it. Only had to use it a few times for what it was built for. It was pertty expensive, but that 20 mile trip is a danger in itself in the middle of a storm.
      • ILuvCats 3 mths ago
Lightning is generally a greater risk than tornadoes, and that's why I have never cared for the outdoor storm shelter idea. I won't buy a home without a basement by choice.
      • Texas Smoke 3 mths ago
I had a storm shelter built last year. It's nice knowing there's a place to go in the event of a CAT 4.

Weather forecasting, despite all the technology, is extremely unreliable. Tornado outbreaks are even less predictable. Climate, based on anything less than about 5000 years or so, is so hard to predict that it is ridiculous.

I'll make a wager it will not be a bad one.

Weather forecasting is the same as multiple guess .
    • Karma  •  3 mths ago
All I can say is, "DUH! Of course they can't predict tornadoes". Thinking they can or ever will be able to is just stupid.

Guess we will just wait for the sirens.......

To get a good idea of how scared You will be in a Tornado see "Tornado Hombre 2010" on You Tube. Same for the "First Person Video Joplin tornado 5/22/2011" Be prepared this Spring. Here's hoping for a mild, quiet Spring instead of what they're predicting.

I don't think anywhere in the US is safe from tornadoes.
    • Carolyn G  •  3 mths ago
I thought I was safe from tornadoes in Massachusetts, until last year. On June 1 there were six tornadoes across New England, and an F3 tornado move through downtown Springfield, the biggest city in the western half of Mass.

The weather services of this country find impossible answers to questions nobody has asked...then present it to us as a comprehensive report on what might happen...as the roofs of our homes are blown off and the walls implode/explode....and then report after its all over......"Wow...we're not sure what numeric level of tornado that was....probably just a wind micro-burst, but seeing that the land and everything on it has been vacuumed clean...had to have been a Fujita scale five......maybe?????" I thought that voodoo was only in Jamaica and around New Orleans...it appears that the NWS has its own voodoo prediction department when it comes to severe weather.....so why tell us its all speculation (?).......WE KNOW THAT ALREADY ! !

get a weather radio if you live in tornado alley or where tornados come. Kroger sells them. You can get them online. Or get the weather channel mobile app for when ur not home.

Forecasters have trouble with tomorrow, never mind long range stuff.
Be prepared at all times. Be aware.
      Don't fool with mother nature.
    • JamesMovieBuff  •  3 mths ago
Hopefully we don't get another 550 deaths from tornados this year.

how can this possibly be a problem i guess insurance carriers would rather Pay OUt than JUMP ALL OVER NASA about a Space based Solar furnance that can heat up a tornado an wipe it out with 150 Degrees on 5 seconds or 120 degrees in 20 seconds how hard is that
