    Totem Data Confirms New Study Results That iPhone Retains Better Resale Value Over Time

    Totem’s prices for used smartphones confirm a new study’s finding that iPhones retain their value better than other brands on the market.

    According to a recent study by Priceonomics, iPhones have better long term value and lower cost of ownership than other smartphone brands on the market. As a leader in the cell phone resale industry, Totem is able to confirm the conclusions of this study.

    After 32 months on the market, an iPhone 3GS with 32GB of memory in mint condition can be sold to Totem for $133.47. Given that this model was launched in June 2009, this means the phone has retained 44.6% of its value, for an average loss of 1.7% per month. Contrast that with a more recent Android model – the HTC Thunderbolt – which was released only 11 months ago, originally selling for $249. The current resale price on Totem for a mint condition Thunderbolt is $106.20. The HTC Thunderbolt has only retained 42.7% of its value, already less than the iPhone 3GS despite being released 20 months later.

    On average, these findings are consistent when comparing the Apple, Android, and BlackBerry brands. “After using your iPhone for 18 months, it still retains 53% versus 42% for Android, and 41% for BlackBerry,” said Priceonomics.

    One of the possible reasons for iPhone’s superior ability to retain value is the overall success of the device. Due to the popularity of the iPhone, there is a large secondary market for refurbished devices and parts, especially in overseas markets. This helps keep resale values high even for waterlogged, scratched, or damaged iPhone models.

    iPhones may also retain their value longer because of their perceived brand caché. While Android phones retain a more functional brand personae and BlackBerry targets the business user, Apple continues to own the perceived luxury brand in the smartphone market.
