New York tourism industry leaders to meet in Albany for tourism summit
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Business leaders will be meeting in Albany, New York this week for a state summit on tourism, which is the fifth largest employer in the state.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a release announcing the summit that it will continue his administration's dialogue with the business community to find ways to boost the tourism sector and create jobs.
The governor's office says Wednesday's tourism summit will include breakout sessions related to sports and event-driven tourism as well as niche markets like agriculture and heritage.
A major platform in Cuomo's tourism strategy is a push for additional non-Indian casinos in upstate New York to draw more of the huge pool of New York City visitors to upstate regions.
Cuomo's office says tourism generated $16.6 billion in wages in 2011.
