    Tourism Leaders Investigate New Technologies and their Effects on Tourism at the 2012 GWTTRA Symposium in Portland Oregon

    At the Greater Western Chapter of Travel & Tourism Research Associaton (GWTTRA) 2012 Symposium in Portland OR., (April 19-21), leading tourism professionals will analyze the effects of new technologies on destination marketing, lodging, attractions, transportation, airports and others. They will review how these transforming technologies will herald a new era for the traveling consumer.

    Over 100 International tourism researchers, practitioners and academics will gather in Portland OR., April 19-21 2012, for a GWTTRA Symposium discussing the effects of new technologies on tourism and the changes it will bring to the traveling consumer over the next 15-20 years.

    Friday April 20th: Eleven leading tourism industry professionals will speak on topics ranging from the effects of new technologies on destination marketing, lodging, attractions, transportation, airports, and how these transforming technologies will herald in a new era of comfort in travel.

    Jeff Miller, President and CEO of Travel Portland, http://www.travelportland.com/ , will open the GWTTRA Symposium. Mr. Miller states; “technology is changing our lives in so many different ways. We must look at how future technology will adapt to the traveler’s needs during the; planning, buying and sharing cycles of their travel experience. I am glad to be part of this important conference.”

    Cees Bosselaar, Destination Marketing Specialist at PhoCusWright, http://www.phocuswright.com/ one of the leading research companies in the global travel industry, will speak on technology and how it is changing the future of destination marketing organizations. Mr Bosselaar remarked, “The role of destination marketing organizations is changing as rapidly as is the consumer and this conference will allow us to look into the crystal ball in order to keep ahead of the wave we are all surfing before it crashes over us.”

    Terry Berggren VP of Ruf Strategic Solutions of Kansas http://www.ruf.com/Welcome/Default.asp believes that travel professionals must understand their consumers better through CRM technology. “We should be able to track our travel consumer not by what they say, but what they actually do” says Berggren. “We can follow them from brand awareness, to engagement, to conversion and be beside them every step of the way.”

    On Saturday April 21st ; Academic papers from leading University tourism researchers will be presented on new technology and its effects on the traveling public. Those invited are from the U.S., New Zealand, Turkey, Mexico and Austria.

    The Greater Western Chapter of the Travel & Tourism Research Association (GWTTRA) encompasses membership from all twelve western states. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement of travel and tourism research through collaboration and education.
