Tow truck catches fire on I-74 in Urbana

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois State Police and the Urbana Fire Department responded to a tow truck fire on Interstate 74 Thursday afternoon.

The fire happened around 3:30 p.m. at Milepost 184 near the exit to University Avenue. Mark Ashby, a Battalion Chief with the Urbana Fire Department, said firefighters were on the scene for about 10 minutes, helping to make sure the fire was fully out. State Troopers were already using fire extinguishers on the truck by the time the fire department arrived.

Last construction phase starting on I-70 in Effingham Co.

The tow truck was the only vehicle involved in the fire. No one was hurt.

Ashby said one lane of traffic was blocked while firefighters were on the scene, resulting in a backup toward Cunningham Avenue. The backup cleared by 4 p.m., State Police officials said, and traffic is flowing normally.
