Toyota aims to bring fun back with "86" sports car

OYAMA-CHO, Japan (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp <7203.T> unveiled a highly anticipated sports car that it hopes will trigger the rebirth of the company as a maker of "fun" cars that it hasn't been in years.

Japan's top automaker took the wraps off the compact, rear-wheel-drive model at the Fuji Speedway circuit at the foot of Mount Fuji on Sunday, in front of thousands of racing fans, in a departure from traditional banquet-room launches.

The unveiling was moved up from the original plan to showcase the car at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens later this week.

Toyota, however, gave away little more than it already had about the 2-liter engine car except for its final design and name, simply called "86" or "Hachi-roku" in Japan and GT86 in Europe, in a tribute to the popular AE86 generation of the Corolla Levin that took the market by storm in the 1980s.

"We've made you wait a long time for this," Toyota Chief Executive Akio Toyoda, dressed in a racing suit, told the crowd as he emerged from an orange 86. "At long last, here is a car for car lovers."

Under Toyoda, who took his post in mid-2009, Toyota is on a mission to shed its image as a manufacturer of reliable but staid cars. On TV and elsewhere, Toyota has been shelling out for high-budget adverts with the taglines "Fun to drive, again" and "Reborn," billing the 86 as a crucial first step to reach that goal.

    TWIN MODEL

The lightweight four-seater 86 is the first sports car under the Toyota badge since production of the MR-S ended in 2007. It was co-developed with Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd <7270.T>, which will sell a twin model as the BRZ under its sporty Subaru brand. Both cars will hit showrooms next spring.

The 86 is powered by the world's first horizontally opposed boxer engine twinned with Toyota's D-4S direct injection technology -- a feat, its chief engineer said, that could only be achieved through the collaboration of two independently minded automakers with distinct approaches to vehicle drivetrains. Toyota owns 16.5 percent of Fuji Heavy.

Subaru is best known for its turbo and symmetrical all-wheel-drive technology -- both of which it ditched to come up with the concept for the 86 and BRZ. Toyota has expertise in rear-wheel drive.

"Usually, when sports cars are developed, it's all about the fastest lap times, horsepower and acceleration," said Tetsuya Tada, the car's chief engineer on the Toyota side.

"But when we asked fans at motorsport events around the world, we found that people were actually looking more for an affordable sports car that feels good driving on any road, and that's not just fast on a circuit. There are few sports cars out there like that."

Tada said the 86's light body, low center of gravity and rear-wheel-drive platform made it sporty and fun, without adding the high costs needed to achieve fast speeds and acceleration.

He declined to disclose a price range, but said he wanted the car to cost about the equivalent of what average college graduates make in their first year, just like the Corolla AE86 in the 1980s. Today, that would put the price at around 2.5 million yen ($32,200) in Japan.

Tada said he had no idea how many of the car Toyota and Subaru might sell, but the reception -- at least at the circuit on Sunday -- was encouraging.

"I think it's fantastic that Toyota is coming out with a car like this," said 43-year-old Tadashi Katayama, who had come to the track with his wife and eight-year-old twins.

"I was a fan of the AE86, and it would be my dream to buy this new car -- maybe when I retire."

    ($1 = 77.6800 Japanese yen)

i want to know what idiots wrote and edited and posted a story about 'unveiling' a new sports car without one half-decent picture of the car???

I went with a Honda Accord over a Camry because I could get a 5 speed on the Accord. Even the Toyota dealer told me that their cars were more "family" versus performance oriented. Guess Toyota is realizing there's money beyond the family niche.

I've never been a huge Toyota fan, but I love this approach. How many owners actually track their everyday drivers, but still want to have a little fun in their everyday commutes? A fun car does not need to boast the most outrageous track specs or 1/4-mile times. Make it quick, nimble, responsive, and affordable, and they could be onto something.

So Toyota wants to introduce a sports car that is affordable and fun to drive? Hey, they already did that when they produced the MR2. I just happen to own a 1986 MR2 which I bought new back then. It is a great little car. Finding parts is getting harder though. By the way, anything with four doors and an automatic transmission is NOT a proper sports car. Just say'n.

Amen! We have been riding around in fun and/or comfortable cars for more than 50 years now. Driving should be fun while you pursue your happiness. Forget the "eat your greenie peas" cars, get a fun and/or comfortable car or truck and enjoy your all too short life! And don't forget on this Thanksgiving weekend to be thankful that you live in the good ol' USA where you can enjoy your "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness!"

wow I thought we left anti-japanese car hysteria in the 80's?
for the record I drive a late 80's toyota. It has hundreds of thousands of miles on it, yet it still runs. It accelerates great and I pass all kinds of cars on the freeway. The kicker? It was made here in the US, employing Americans.

The Toyota Corolla 2-door Sport car and the Supra were the fast and fun cars in the 80s. Then toyota went conservative.

We stopped driving our new toyota and it's parked in the driveway. The runaway Toyota problem was not really solved. Mr. Toyoda is finally able to return to his roots as a gentle, fun-loving, playboy with this sports car. Mr. Toyoda, what happened to your mentor on the racetrack who died so suddenly? And that was hushed up. What was that about? Mr. Toyoda -- you're likable but I don't believe you would care if the common folk died in a runaway Toyota. We ironically like you but do not believe you for our own safety sake. We will not drive our new Toyota until you prove it's really not defective. Mr. Toyoda -- you look nice but I think you would kill us in a heartbeat because you don't want to get it. And that makes me sad.

Silly name. Doesn't toyota realize what '86' means in this country? In the military it means to sh!tcan it. Might as well call it the '69'.

If Toyota's Management actually were smart people, they'd bring back an upgraded and beefed up: 1968 Toyota Land Crusier two door and 4 door instead of that ugly monster they got now., the 1980 Toyota long be with a higher ground clearance and TRD suspension, the 1995 Toyota 4Runner, the 2003 Tacoma TRD, all vehicles that were hot sellers..The newer versions all look like Fords & Dodges and get about the same gas milage too...The new Tacoma is just ruined compared to the 2003 TRD Tacoma. I own one and it now has 168,000 miles without any major repairs or problems and was sort of looking for one that burns Regular gas instead of 91 Octane but the new is ugly and huge and a gas hog comparatively...I am beginng to think Toyota only brings out something good every ten years or so and that is about it...

Just bring back the SUPRA HKS ! I used to have the 84 Supra. Ground effects and all. I tell you it was a thing of beauty. I bought it used, "souped" it up a little and boy can it go. I guess most of you might not even heard of the supra. But if Toyota ever wants to bring something iconic back, I would pay for a Supra.

Wonder if Toyota could revive their wonderful line of old school, small, affordable 4x2 and 4x4 pickup trucks . . . oh, how I miss those little trucks!

Toyota you still don't get the Hachi Phenomenom. You need to make it simple and modifiable. Leave room for improvements. Look at the Original. It is a Wannabe Sports Coupe and that is not what us Weekend warriors want. We don't want a Toyota Sports Car. If you want to give us a Toyota Sports Car then bring back the Supra. We want a Rear Wheel Drive 4 Seater Front Engine 5/6 Speed Manual Trans. I am fine with a a live rear axle.
and most of all it must be affordable! Like under $20k. Make it like the original. For those who want more give them a new Supra. I am happy that there is a new Toyota Sports car, but even with the MR-S you guys messed up. It was too ugly. The original MR2 was way better looking. and it used Corolla bin parts. The 2nd Gen was more Celica parts. which was great. The 4AG-GE and the 3SG-GTE are my favorite US motors. My favorite JDM motors is the 1GG-GTE, 3TG-GTE and 4AG-GZE, Those motors looked beautiful in the engine compartment. You can still make us happy by making the Scion TC RWD. Please go back to the drawing board.

4 doors? Lame..... Why not put a 3 cylinder with an automatic in it along with buttons to close the trunk for you.... Sounds like they are caving to the soccer moms and dads again....

Reminds me of the 1968 Toyota 750 sportscar. That vehicle had a 2 cylinder horizontally opposed engine and was air cooled. Very peppy with a decent ride and great gas mileage. Now it si a collectors item. I drove one in Japan, but owned a Honda S600 with a chain drive rear end. Loved that car and apparently Jay Leno does too since he owns one.

Before all the losses in the US world standing brought on by entitlements the US dollar was at $1=360 yen. #$%$ democrats ruined everything. And since the liberal take over, costs have risen a total of at least 400 percent, gas for example was 34-5 cents a gallon before liberals got in charge and stopped our economic booms. . Just three years ago, November of 08 before obummer gas was $1.49, Jimmy Dean sausage was under a buck a pound.
