Toyota to recall 82,200 vehicles in the US

TOKYO (AP) — Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it will recall about 82,200 hybrid SUVs in the U.S. due to computer boards with possible faulty wiring.

The car giant said the recall will involve Highlander and Lexus brand hybrid SUVs from its 2006 and 2007 lines. The action covers just the vehicles sold in the U.S., with no other models affected.

The recall is the latest setback for Toyota, which is just recovering from the earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan in March. The company earlier this month predicted annual profit will fall nearly a third due to recent production disruptions related to the disasters, though it expects a strong rebound in the coming months.

Wednesday's recall involves about 45,500 Highlander Hybrid and 36,700 Lexus Rx 400h vehicles, the company's U.S. subsidiary said in a press release.

Toyota said the affected vehicles' hybrid system has a computer board with inadequate soldering that could be damaged during high-load driving. If damage were to occur, the company said the vehicles would either continue to operate under reduced power for a short distance, or coast to a stop.

The automaker said it is working on obtaining replacement parts, and for now will notify owners of possibly faulty vehicles by mid-July.

Toyota was recovering from a series of recalls that soiled its reputation for safety and eventually reached 14 million vehicles worldwide when the natural disasters struck in March.

The company said last week it will hire 3,000 to 4,000 temporary workers in Japan to be ready for a recovery in vehicle production as automakers bounce back and revamp their operations.

Even with a recovery, Toyota is expected to lose its spot as the world's top-selling automaker to General Motors Co. this year because of the disasters.

Japanese automakers are also dealing with possible electricity shortages after the quake and tsunami destroyed a nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan.

Toyota still makes a good vehicle. 99.99 % of the car is better than any other car in the world but a few printed circuit boards are bad so Toyota replaces hundreds of thousands of them in order to be sure that the dozen or so get replaced. I'll bet your Rolls spends more time getting serviced by the dealer than you Toyota does!

Whatever you say. Don't even begin to buy that. No manufacturer had ever tried to cover up a defect like they did with the gas pedal

They are no longer the best. GM was great at one time too, but Toyota just had to pass them up for image. Now look at them, they are in the same position GM was in as far as being judged on quality.

Toyota has never been the best maybe sales but not quality.

Voluntary recall. Means no agency told them to.

You think a bottom-line focused US company would be making voluntary recalls in this media climate?

Nope. They just issue a Technical Service Bulletin and let the consumer deal with the costs of their design or production faults.

Funny all car companies used to know how to build a decent vehicle, with the improvement of onboard computers they are having all types of problems from hardware to software. I remember when a computer was kept in a climate controled environment away from extream heat, cold and humidity.
      .
That couldn't be the problem though.

Today's MPG would be impossible without those computers.
      • Gene 11 mths ago
1953 Nash Metropolitan got 45 to 50 mpg without computers. 1960's Corvair got upwards of 30 mpg without computers. Early 1960's Plymouth Valiant was capable of 25+ mpg. They didn't go from '0' to '60' in 3.5 seconds though. But they did run Highway speeds of 70-to unlimited speed limits as posted at the time they were new.

I'm not sure how they will rebound. Currently, my local dealers are charging thousands OVER msrp due to limited volume. I saw this back in the late 90's when I looked at a specific model. This completely turns off most consumers and like me, they buy other brands. I believe Toyota should address this issue since it does nothing to their bottom line and alienates consumers.

Umm, y'see, there was this earthquake. Maybe you read about it? Kinda put a kink in production volume.

Toyota was the best quality made auto with a great gas mileage until they moved their factories to a failed manufacturing country that can't do anything right but make a good pizza - - USA!

      ROHS solder, no doubt...

For those of you not in the know, ROHS is a European law to reduce the amount of lead in electronics. The new solder is very brittle and is responsible for all the Xbox "red ring of death" problems as well. And while the law doesn't matter in the US, nobody overseas wants to use one kind of solder for US products and the ROHS solder for the EU market. So we all get to enjoy brand new problems driven by the EU's desire to eliminate the 2 grams of lead from electronic boards. Never mind about the car battery, which has 9071 grams of lead in it...

HA HA! Just another reason why drive-by-wire is a bad plan. You used to be able to work on your own car in your own driveway or garage with nothing but a basic tool set and maybe a couple of specialty tools. Now days you need a special computer and very expensive proprietary software just to diagnose the problem and make adjustments. I will never buy another new vehicle again, between the stupid computers and on board so called "black boxes" that will tattle tale on you to authorities. No thanks!

Psalm 121:1-2 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
May the great grace of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ &
the peace of God be with the people of Japan.
Many people in America are praying for you.
May your eyes & hearts be opened to see that the answer is not in Buddha,
but in the Living God ~ the Creator of heaven & earth.
Be strong and very courageous my dear brothers & sisters.
