Traditional 'Sexist' Beliefs Keep Women from Combat, Scientists Say

This article was updated at 2:11 pm EST Feb. 13

The military is opening up jobs for women thanks to eased regulations announced Thursday (Feb. 9), but Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum's opposition to women in direct combat may help reveal the reasons women haven't been allowed on the front lines. The belief, however, contains more myth than science, say sociologists and others who study women in the military.

The truth is, some women are capable, both physically and mentally, of performing admirably on the front lines, just like some men are, Ryan Kelty, a sociologist specializing in the military from Washington College, told LiveScience. Women are currently serving in many positions that put them in harm's way already, Kelty said.

"They can serve as transportation personnel. They can be military police," Kelty said. "They might not be the ones knocking in the door, but they are standing right next to the man who is. Women can do those jobs and they can do them well."

    Changes to policy

In an effort to reduce gender-based restrictions on service, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced last week that it would open up 14,000 military jobs to women. Throughout the military, about 80 percent of jobs are open to women currently, but this varies significantly depending on the branch: The Air Force has 99 percent of positions open to women, but the Army has only 69 percent.

The changes include eliminating the"co-localization" rule, which keeps women out of positions localized with direct combat units. Eliminating the policy opens up more than 13,000 positions and even added a few new specialties, such as tank mechanic. The other big change includes opening up more than 1,000 positions at the battalion level (group of about 800 military personnel) to women in specialties such as intelligence and communications. [The History of Human Aggression]

"This report is a start," Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) said in a statement. "Unfortunately, the conclusions of this report do not go far enough. I am very disappointed," Sanchez said, adding that the new openings are essentially, "a pilot program, which I believe is ridiculous." As a member of the House Armed Services Committee,Sanchez is fighting for gender equality in the military both on and off the battlefield.

    Why gender differences

Currently women make up nearly 15 percent of the nation's 1.5 million active duty military personnel, pointing to the fact that gender equality in the military has come a long way since the '70s, when North Dakota was off limits because "it was too cold," said Vee Penrod, the deputy assistant undersecretary of defense for military personnel. Still, more than 280,000 service positions had remained closed to women.

Some share Santorum's worries that women don't have the necessary physical strength and stamina to do the job, or fear that women's presence might hurt unit cohesion or create sexual tension. Other concerns include privacy (including situations like women being able to find places to urinate while on patrol) and rooming issues on submarines.

But experience finds that women are already able to do many "men's" military jobs without causing these problems: They are already serving alongside men in the field, as "attachments" instead of assignments. To date, 144 women have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, about 60 of them in combat.

"If they can be there and do that job, let them do that job legitimately," Kelty said. "I would certainly think that for those women, that will be a big deal and give them a better sense of appropriate inclusion and giving credit where credit is due."

    Possible impacts

Establishing gender-neutral requirements (a soldier — male or female — must be able to carry a 100-pound pack for eight hours, for example) for any given position, which the DoD plans to do, would go a long way to equalizing the gender divide in the military, Kelty said.

Any woman who meets the physical and mental criteria for a position should be able to apply for that position, no matter if it's deemed as "direct combat," Kelty said.

If a woman is capable, the traditionally held beliefs that they should be kept safe are bigger barriers than physical differences. Kelty equates this gender inequality to racial inequality that permeated the armed forces for decades, when African-American soldiers were segregated and the positions open to them were limited. [Busted! 6 Gender Myths]

Just like when blacks were first desegregated, "there will perhaps be growing pains; but maybe we have already gone through some of those, since we've seen those transitions on the ground," by deploying women as attachments, Kelty said. "That's not a reason not to do it and it certainly doesn't justify the systematic exclusion of individuals who want to serve and are capable of serving."

These new openings are just the beginning, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta stressed. The process of opening more positions up to women will be based on further review of the current changes and how they are implemented. Kelty believes we could see women on the front lines in 10 to 20 years.

"They have a lot of work to do, but I think they see what the objective is," Kelty said. "Given limited resources and the fact that they are playing catch-up, my perception is that they are moving in the right direction."

Correction: This article was updated at 2:11 pm EST Feb. 13, to fix a typo in paragraph nine. The line originally said: "To date, 144 women have lost their lives in Iran and Afghanistan, about 60 of them in combat." Iran was changed to Iraq.

Draw a performance line (like they do in the SEALS or any other special forces unit) and admit those that pass. This means meeting all requirements, not just those that are socially acceptable...no "time outs." That's for kindergarten folk. That goes for men and/or women.

Things will be equal when 18 year old women have to register for the selective service just like the men.

Scientists don't deal in terms like 'sexist'. There's nothing scientific about the political philosophy of women as victims.

Santorum and my step-dad share the same views

I am wondering if the author knows the meaning of the word "science". This article contains absolutely no scientific content. None. Even the broadest definition of science requires some sort of empirical methodology, data gathering and data analysis. Nothing of the sort is cited in this little story. As far as I can tell, Ms. Welsh decided she wanted to write an editorial and then found support in the opinions of one guy who would like to think he is a scientist.
      • Erin 3 mths ago
Or, the author just did an extremely poor job of representing the science. That's usually how "science articles" go. If you want to read about science, go read a reputable journal like "Nature." There's plenty of science to back up the idea of women in combat. The author just did a poor job of conveying it by a) using only once source and b) not citing any actual studies and linking to said studies.

Set the physical standards and intelligence standards and then let those men and women that pass do the job. But eliminate special standards for women. Either they can run 8 hours with a 100 pound pack, or they can't.

The last thing I would want to see on my team are three or four 100 pound women that are not going to be much help to me and the rest of the team as we hold a log up over our heads for an hour. Either they can pull their share, or they can't. No special considerations. None.

That alone eliminates women from a huge number of jobs.

The whole point isn't who specifically can and can't. Some can, some can't. The problem will be with special operations units. There, it is as much about a psychological fit with the men and how well you mesh psychologically with the team. Those teams exist for one purpose: extremely high risk, black operations. It is not a social training ground. Political correctness counts for nothing.

I guess not wanting too hear horrid stories about U.S. Military woman savagely rapped if captured or pulled off the line because they've been knocked up, or some combat unit sex scandal plastered all over the news.. Yes this happened with the Navy. .....Well call me sexist. I for one say let'em kill. BUT, I don't want to see combat units, training dumb down, like basic training. You want on the front lines....earn it.
      • Jenn 3 mths ago
So, blame the victims, then, in cases of sexual assault?
    • Tommy  •  Wilmington, North Carolina  •  3 mths ago
anyone that says they are just as capable physically is an idiot. They do not even require girls to be able to do 1 pull up to get through basic training. If it ever comes down to hand to hand combat they are pretty much useless.
      • Michelle 3 mths ago
Just as a clarification.... When I went through Boot Camp, women were not required to do pull-ups, but instead we were required to do a "flexed arm hang" . In order to get a "perfect" score, you had to hang for 70 seconds. What that entailed was getting on the pull up bar and starting off, you were in an "up" position for the pull up. You then held yourself in that position as long as you could. When your arms were straight, your time ended. I challenge any male to do that particular exercise. Some can, but most have a hard time with that particular exercise.

When I studied Tae Kwon Do, I sparred against a 16-year-old girl who could kick your #$%$ She earned her black belt. It wasn't handed to her because of a gender-based quota.
      • Tim 3 mths ago
So Michelle, were women required to run a mile in the same time limit, do the same number of push ups, or spar with men? I am glad you could do a flexed arm hang but honestly physical standards are not the same because sexual dimorphism exists.

they shouldn't keep capable women from thiese jobs, but there is a signifigant physical difference between the average man and woman that should be observed, but as a guideline not a rule, since some men are not even really physically qualifyied to complete some of thiese tasks.
    • JoshuaK  •  Homedale, Idaho  •  3 mths ago
NO No No!! All positions should not be opened up to women. As a former military policeman, I served with numerous female soldiers, and yes they are very capable soldiers, whether in a support position or in a combat role (I worked with several women who distinguished themselves very well in engaging and killing the enemy, such as SGT Leigh Ann Hester. BTW, if you don't know her story, please Google her name). The problem is not the gender difference, but that anytime you have men and women together in a close and closed environment (such a small FOB, OP/LP, etc.), drama results. I have seen units absolutely torn apart by drama resulting from romantic entanglements with men and women, and in several cases, resulting in both murder and suicide (the three cases that come immediately to mind all happened in Iraq). The main problem with women serving in all positions in the Army is not the difference in their plumbing, nor their nurturing spirit, but the fact that young men in combat (and out of combat), are horny, and will do anything to sleep with a female, while the girls, who are suddenly far more popular than they could've ever dreamed, will capitalize on this, and suddenly the whole unit is involved, taking sides, blaming, gossiping, and the mission priorities fade into the background.

If the Army wants to involve women in combat arms units, I think the only way to avoid the drama is to segregate the sexes into different units of all male or all female, thus avoiding these 'Desperate Housewives of Iraq (or Afghanistan)' situations where the entire unit is taken up with who's sleeping with who.

Sexual Trauma in the Military Reserves and the National Guard

60% of women have experienced military sexual trauma
23% of women have experienced military sexual assault
11% of women have experienced rape

Service branch with the highest percentage of women reporting sexual trauma: Marine Corps

20% of women seeking care at VA facilities have experienced sexual trauma

8.3 percentage of women report lifetime PTSD related to MST

More than half of the incidents took place at a military work site and during duty hours

The majority of the offenders in these cases were military personnel

Factors that increase risk of sexual assault for active duty females include presence of officers who condone or allow sexual harassment and unwanted sexual attention

Really people, it is not so much the women themselves that are the problem. Yes, there are many women out there who are physically and mentally capable of doing every job there is in the military. The service members who are NOT mentally capable of allowing women in combat are typically men, who are not ready to allow women to be terrorized. As a former Woman Marine who held a combat MOS, I watched this phenomenon in action. The men I worked with, were so busy trying to make sure I was safe, they were not effective in their own jobs.
    • Me  •  3 mths ago
Most of the people that I talk to that against women in combat, firefighters and police, mostly have the physical ability argument. We lower the standards for the physical fitness tests for women, then talk about how "equal" they are. If they are truely equal, then they should have to adhere to the same physical standards as the men. If they then can qualify, then they can do the job. If not, then too bad, you don't qualify. It's pretty cut and dry.
    • MOB  •  3 mths ago
There is a reason why women don't compete against men in the olympics. Have you ever seen a woman pro football player or a woman boxing a man? They are not physically made for battle against men. There is always a few exceptions but very few. As a Marine veteran a company of 50% women sounds like something that would get everyone killed.

If I had to serve again, the last thing I would want to see in battle zone is some Womans Brains and Guts blown all over the place in combat.

Women are the weaker vessel and to argue only proves ignorance. Who would you rather have defending you in battle: Brian Urlacher or Michelle Obama? I think you see my point.

they should leave these choices for military officials that actually know what combat is like. Not democrats in washington that dodged the draft.
    • CB  •  3 mths ago
OK, once someone in charge acknowledges the facts that men are bigger, stronger and faster than women and that it would be more expensive to field female combat troops I have an open mind for suggestions on this!
