A trailer for Michael R. Roskam's "The Drop" starring James Gandolfini, Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace has been unveiled.

Gandolfini, who died of a heart attack in 2013 at 51, plays Marv, the owner of a New York bar managed by his cousin, Bob Saginowski, a former inmate played by Tom Hardy. Although he is trying to clean up his act, Bob winds up in trouble with gangsters after the bar is robbed.

The film also stars Noomi Rapace ("Prometheus") as Bob's girlfriend. Young Belgian actor Mathias Schoenaerts ("Of Rust and Bone") plays one of the bar's patrons involved in the affair.

"The Drop" was directed by Belgian filmmaker Michael R. Roskam ("Bullhead") from a script written by Dennis Lehane that he adapted from his short story "Animal Rescue."

Several of Lehane's novels have been adapted for film ("Mystic River," "Gone Baby Gone," "Shutter Island"), but this is the first time the author is writing the script himself.

The film will open on September 12 in the US.
