Ransacking trash heaps as best they can, three Brazilian street kids stumble upon confidential wallet contents that plunge them into a national conspiracy.

If some of the cuts have a documentary quality about them, that's because Stephen Daldry's three child leads are fresh to acting, placed opposite Hollywood talent in Martin Sheen, the priest who holds their incendiary secret, and Rooney Mara as an NGO worker caught up in the chase.

Brazilian talent further populates the cast list, with the likes of Wagner Moura of "Elysium," Selton Mello of the award-winning "The Clown" [original title "O Palhaço"] and Moura's colleague from the hit "Elite Squad" series ["Tropa de Elite"] among the names included.

Daldry, who has never failed to make a feature that did not receive an Oscar nomination, chose an untested talent for his last picture, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," after seeing first-timer Thomas Horn on a special edition of the quiz show "Jeopardy!"

"Trash" is due to premiere at the Festival do Rio on October 9 before wider distribution starting the week of November 12 (France and Belgium).

North American distribution is yet to be agreed but expected to follow as interest surrounding the Oscars increases in the lead-up to February 2015's ceremony.
