'Transformers' hit lower orbit with $37.3M launch

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Optimus Prime and his fellow Transformers are not quite over the moon with their latest box-office count.

According to distributor Paramount Pictures, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" took in $37.3 million domestically in its first full day Wednesday. That's a 40 percent drop from its predecessor, "Revenge of the Fallen," which pulled in $62 million two years ago on opening day, which also was a Wednesday.

Adding in $5.5 million from debut screenings Tuesday night, "Dark of the Moon" raised its domestic haul to $42.8 million. The movie also has taken in $36.6 million in 85 overseas countries where it has opened.

While the domestic total is well below the launch of "Revenge of the Fallen," the new "Transformers" sequel still is off to a healthy start. "Dark of the Moon" had the best single day for a movie this year, topping the previous high of $34.9 million on opening day for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."

The disparity between "Revenge of the Fallen" and the latest "Transformers" installment is even deeper considering 60 percent of revenues for "Dark of the Moon" came from pricier 3-D tickets. That means the audience was even smaller than for the 2-D "Revenge of the Fallen."

Admission prices also have risen since 2009, further widening the ticket gap between the two movies.

Based on an average movie price this year of $8.01 calculated by the National Association of Theatre Owners, "Dark of the Moon" sold about 4.7 million tickets in its first day. "Revenge of the Fallen" sold about 8.3 million on opening day, based on 2009's average ticket price of $7.50.

"Dark of the Moon" had the sixth-biggest opening day domestically among movies debuting on a Wednesday. Last year's "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" had the best Wednesday debut at $68.5 million, followed by "Revenge of the Fallen."

Also their toy line is the worst ever. This is the first Transformers Hasbro line that most collectors walked away from. They made the figures for the kids but the kids and parents also complain that they are made cheap and fall apart and over priced. The collectors like myself would rather save money to buy takara transformers straight from Japan. The girl in the film doesn't impress anyone to want to go see it. We just want to see a good story and cool looking Transformers that look like "Transformers." The movie version doesn't look like anything from Hasbro. To bad they had to make a deal with Chevy because they are also limited on what cars they can use. Other than that I'm still a big fan and plan to watch it in 3D today.

Chevys Suck the Bee should be a VW.

Bumblebee as a Chevy is just plain dumb (Uhhhh...Bumblebee...Bug). That's what corporate money will do for ya.
And I still have a good deal of my G1 Transformers toys. Love my Optimus with the diecast metal parts. Good stuff.

Nobody thinks the new "Beetle" is cool, nobody could relate to it except true fans and VW heads. Camaro was a decent choice but watching all these Chevy's does make me sick. At least Barricade was a Mustang, and now there's a Chevy Volt in the movie? Common, give me a Chrysler 300 or Challenger or Charger? Another Mustang, Ford GT, Ford Raptor??? Porsche GT Carrera or Panamera, Lexus or BMW? Maybe show us some car's we'd want to buy.

The reason is because ROTF was horrible and audiences were expecting the same garbage in this movie... Once word gets out that DOTM is a decent movie the numbers will get better.

I have yet to see a single positive review of Transformers 3.

I just gave it one. I said it was a decent movie.

Maybe its the cost of the movie tickets are deterring people from seeing it. $10 is a lot of money for some right now.

All you do is wait about 6 months and I cn get it on DVD.

Thought new releases came out on Fridays or was it Thursday late at night? not that I give a crap about how much a movie makes, but a Tuesday release? and we are writing an article on how bad it has done? and cmon' don't pick on Transformers, what are we going to end up with for future entertainment movies? Ben 10? Pokemon? ugh!
Anyway, last movie I saw at the theatre was Avatar and that was like over $30 to see in 3-d at the Imax. I don't know how people afford to see so many movies. Invest in a home theatre.

So I guess Megan was the money maker - could call Steven, good call Michael. So they didn't see the movie for the special effects, the witty dialog or the action packed story line - it was for butt shots and down shirts of Megan.

and it aint much of a butt or boobs,i agree with tonyl the 2nd movie sucked, megan aint that big a draw that another skinny white girl can't take her place

I'm not sure what anyone expected since Bay started promoting Trannies 3 by saying it's SO much better than the second one that he basically acknowledged couldn't have sucked worse.
    • unknown  •  11 mths ago
The second movie was so bad it turned me off from seeing the third
    • Eric  •  11 mths ago
The first movie sucked, but it had Megan Fox. The second movie sucked, but it had Megan Fox. The third movie sucks, because it doesn't star Megan Fox.

I agree with TonyL, also factor in next week is the 4th of July, folks will turn out in droves over the weekend and upcoming holiday. It really just hasn't got its steam yet, but with really no new competition this week, it'll be a sure fire mega hit.
    • EM  •  11 mths ago
What do you expect with high ticket prices? All they really care about is the MONEY. I will still go see the movie Not based on this report or reviews they give.
    • Jennifer  •  11 mths ago
Does anyone really go to the movies on Wednesday night? It'll kill the weekend box office, this is 4th of July weekend!
    • RupkinMae  •  11 mths ago
Saw it Tuesday night and it was pretty intense. I didn't care for the new girl in the movie but then I'm just there with my 8 year old who's obsessed with Transformers. It was my first 3D movie and it was quite intense. We're taking the whole family tomorrow night to see it at an IMAX theater. Think my husband will enjoy the new chickie do da! ☺
    • Chip Baker  •  11 mths ago
Well the 2nd one just sucked. So I can wait for the DVD. We quit going to movies years ago. Movies at home are better as you do not have to deal with the public!
    • Steven  •  11 mths ago
Umm the weekend hasn't even started, aren't they counting their moneyz a bit early.
    • Brian S  •  11 mths ago
Maybe the weather was better this year and people didn't need to leave the noisy beaches and parks to go and be deafened!!
    • Mooncricket  •  11 mths ago
That's because they over did it with the look of the characters. They look to skeleton looking like it could of been a He-Man movie or "Aliens" Geiger style.
    • Broman  •  11 mths ago
It is worth seeing. I saw it with my two children and we all enjoyed the movie. It is a little long, but there were a lot of cool references. Toward the beginning there were two characters from Chuck, also Leonard Nimoy makes a statement later that is directly from Star Trek. Got to love it.
