Treasury dips into pension funds to avoid debt

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Treasury on Tuesday started dipping into federal pension funds in order to give the Obama administration more credit to pay government bills.

"I will be unable to invest fully" the federal employees retirement system fund beginning Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said in a letter to Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on Wednesday on the Obama administration's request to raise the country's legal debt limit to $16.394 trillion.

However, unless the lower chamber and the Senate are able to shore up enough votes to block the White House request, the debt limit will be increased by $1.2 trillion next Friday and a repeat of last year's debt ceiling debacle will be averted.

Geithner said Treasury started suspending reinvestments in a federal pension fund known as the G-Fund -- a tool Treasury has had to employ six times over the past 20 years in order to keep the country below the statutory debt limit.

The Treasury Department has already tapped another seldom-used fund in order to allow the government to continue borrowing without running afoul of the country's laws.

Sounds VERY familiar. Not SO long ago, a democratic president and his dem congressmen voted to STEAL (call it what it is) from the social security fund by voting to move it to the general fund, and they bilked baby boomers out of trillions of their hard-earned and fairly paid retirement $$, and NOW they want to LOWER how much the baby boomers get in retirement payments because they SPENT all the money. Now they're doing it to the federal pension fund. If I was a payer into that fund, I'd be organizing a HUGE protest in front of the Whitehouse and tell them to stop stealing our money, otherwise, it WILL be gone, and you WON'T get it back, and they'll LOWER how much they're supposed to pay you when you retire. Watch and see........ tax and spend, borrow and spend.......steal and spend....it's the liberal way.

When does this end? Really? When are we going to reach the point to where it hits them that they have to be like all the rest of the country and live within their means?
    • Tom  •  1 mth 8 days ago
First they steal from the social security trust fund and now they are stealing from federal employees retirement funds. WHY can't they just stop spending?

How is this not Front Page, top of the page news?.. Seriously, what are we going to tell our kids? "Don't worry about it, you can pass this debt to your kids and grandkids."

That's okay, they have been dipping into the taxpayers' pension money -social security- for decades. It would be nice to think that they would segregate that money out to keep it separate for its intended purpose. But the crooks in Washington have been 'borrowing' from it for many years and replacing it IOUs. How good do you think those IOUs are? Is that any way to run a country? Yes, a country that is on its way down, betrayed by its leaders. As for the federal pension, they should not even have one. They cannot run a pension plan properly. They should all be in the social security system also and have a 401k type of plan to contribute to if they want. Our government's main skill is making money disappear. There should be term limits for Congress.

There is a blunt message Id like to send to congress, but this isn't it.Stealing from honest people that saved money for their pensions or worked hard for them so they can retire,Its clear the government has failed all of us..........we are said to have the best government in the world... our ship is sinking fast...God Bless America...........sad sad sad

So.... let me get this right....... I spend beyond my means.... I spend more money every month than I make, and I just keep racking up a credit card with no limit, is that right??? I just keep doing it..... all I need to do is get 2 credit cards. When the bill comes in, just pay it with the other one, then when that one comes due, use the other card. ahhhhhhh got it! I like this plan!

how about we quit giving aid to all these foreign countries and start taking care of business at home first. we are drowning here and the government doesnt seem to care about americans, they just keep giving our money to dif countries and neglecting things at home.

      Stopppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp spending!

Quit spending what we don't have! It actually is that simple. Every working family in America has a budget. If you have $50 for food, you don't buy $100 worth of food and hope to pay for it later. Quit spending what you don't have!!! No new taxes, just budget and spend what we have!!! Bunch of morons running this country!
