Troops and hoops for Obama, on a Navy warship

CORONADO, Calif. (AP) — Soaking in one of the most spectacular settings of his time in office, President Barack Obama pledged an unwavering commitment to veterans Friday from the deck of an aircraft carrier doubling, for one night, as a gleaming basketball court.

The president's patriotic message to the military crowd, while welcomed, was secondary to the scene itself. The players from two storied basketball programs, No. 1 North Carolina and Michigan State, competed aboard the USS Carl Vinson in the open air, in the dusk of a perfect San Diego evening.

Basketball star power was on hand in the form of Magic Johnson and James Worthy, former teammates on the Los Angeles Lakers and alums of Michigan State and North Carolina, respectively.

The first-ever Carrier Classic gave Obama a chance to honor troops and pay tribute on the 95,000-ton Navy warship that buried Osama bin Laden's body at sea. For the hoops-loving president, topping it all off with a college basketball game played outside and on water was surely unforgettable.

"Every American citizen can make a solemn pledge today that they will find some opportunity to provide support to our troops, to those who are still active duty, to our national guard, to our reservists and to our veterans," Obama told the crowd before the game got under way.

"It's especially appropriate that we do it here," Obama said, referencing the carrier's role in "that critical mission to bring Osama bin Laden to justice." He later observed to an ESPN interviewer that "this is the last time Osama bin Laden was on the face of the earth, so there's a lot of history on this ship."

A day after the Senate acted in unusual bipartisan agreement to pass a small piece of the president's jobs bill aimed at helping veterans, Obama said that to support veterans was "a sacred trust."

"That gratitude we have for the men and women in the armed forces does not stop when they take off the uniform," he said.

There were about 7,000 people in the crowd, both teams wore camouflage versions of their regular uniforms and two fighter jets screamed right above the carrier anchored off the coast of San Diego just as the singing of the national anthem was reaching its final notes.

Once the game started Obama, wearing a bomber jacket, watched from the sidelines, looking thrilled, as Michelle Obama looked on at his side.

Despite the unusual setting, it quickly turned into a real basketball environment as the sun set and night fell over the giant warship.

"Can we get a call, ref?" one sailor shouted.

"Get your head in the game!" said another.

The court was surrounded by stands of fans, so no loose balls had a chance of splashing in the water.

    North Carolina won 67-55.

Obama's stop in San Diego was the first leg of a nine-day diplomacy mission he's embarking on, to Hawaii, where the U.S. is hosting an economic summit for the Asia-Pacific, and from there to Australia and Indonesia. He is aiming to use the trip to create bonds and boost U.S. business in the region before arriving back in Washington Nov. 20.

As you go through the photos, a true hero shows up twice, yet there is no mention of him in the articles that I've red. Sitting to the left of the president is a man wearing a red sweater and a red, white and blue cap. The object that caught my eye, before I noticed anything else about the two photos, was the pale blue ribbon with white stars and a star shaped medal hanging from the ribbon. A Medal of Honor recipient. I'm just curious as to why the media diidn't mention it.

I hate refering to Medal of Honor recipients as winners. To me a winner is someone who sets out with a specific goal, and achieves that goal. A runner winning a race, a child winning a spelling bee, etc. No one in their right mind wakes up one day and says, I think I'll go win a Medal of Honor. Medal of Honor recipients start their days just like the average joe in the military. His thought for the day, I hope we don't run into anyone trying to kill us today, that would be so messed up. Before the end of the day, because someone, the enemy, didn't share share his wishes, he finds himself doing things, in order to save himself and his fellow soldiers, that never occured in his wildest dreams.

if we only stop dropping our bombs all over the world, we will find peace at home, but not when we created millions of orphans, widows, dead, injured, destroyed homes, towns, countries that our controlled media calls freedom and democracy spreading....stop the lies and live in peace.

I am in the military. I have deployed 3 times as Infantry. I was injured downrange and now I am being medically reclassed after 9 years in. I make a quarter of what any politician makes and they get to retire in about a quater of the time it takes me. When not deployed soldiers work on average 65 hour work weeks. When we are deployed we work 24/7 for 12 months. We are forced to leave our families for weeks, months, and sometimes a year plus for our job. I have been shot at and blown up several times. But this government wants to cut my retirement in half, cut my pay, cut my benefits because I volunteered to be in the military and choose to be in this stressful enviroment so pencil pushers wouldn't have to get their rich hands dirty. Now the government is trying to fix their budget mess ups by putting 50,000 of us on the streets next year. Then another 20,000 in 2014. No retirement, no severance package, no home, and no new job. Just, "hey we don't have to honor your service because you lived. It worked for us in 1975 so why not now too. Don't worry troops Obama said he will fix the jobs problem. Some day, maybe, if it suits him." What does a soldier have to do to get what he/she has earned while serving the country they love. I guess you have to be KIA to get that. Worth more dead then alive.

The average everyday American has been supporting our troops since the establishment of our country. We've never needed anyone, especially those who haven't been proud of their country, to tell us how to honor our military. History shows, with the exception of terrible treatment of Vietnam vets by SOME so-called citizens, that we love, support, and respect our troops at all times, not just on Veterans Day.

I wonder how many of these sailors will be out of work when the super committee can't agree and they have to start cutting the military. By the way 30% of vets 20-26 are long term unemployed. Maybe they could get a job with MF Global? LOL

So, what happens if an ememy attacks the ship during a basketball game?
    • d  •  6 mths ago
This headline is crap. The game was not played for Obama and the troops were not there for him. Another made up headline to support Yahoo's/AP's choice for president. Try writing about the troops and the peolpe that put on the game for them.
    • Tired  •  6 mths ago
Maybe he should try supporting the troops by paying them what they are worth!
