Tropical Storm Cosme forms in Pacific southwest of Mexico; expected to stay away from coast

MIAMI - Tropical Storm Cosme has formed in the Pacific southwest of Mexico and is expected to stay away from the country's coast.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Monday are near 40 mph (65 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says some strengthening is expected and the storm could become a hurricane by Tuesday night or Wednesday.

Cosme is centred about 435 miles (695 kilometres) south of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is moving northwest near 10 mph (17 kph).
