TSA finds 13 knives in carry-on at DC-area airport

LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) — Transportation Security Administration officers say they found 13 knives, including switchblades and a butterfly knife, inside a man's carry-on luggage at a Washington-area airport.

TSA spokesman Kawika Riley says an officer operating an X-ray machine last week at Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International Airport noticed something suspicious in the man's luggage.

Sgt. Kirk Perez, a Maryland Transportation Authority Police spokesman, says 25-year-old Amr Gamal Shedid of Baltimore had been trying to board a flight to Minnesota. He says Shedid told investigators he collects knives.

Shedid has been charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, interfering with security procedures and having an unauthorized weapon in an airport. Court records do not list an attorney for Shedid, and a phone listing for him could not be found.

Lets see what the guy looked like,,i woder if he was a 6 yr old boy or a 95 yr old white woman wearing depends?????,,,,RACIAL PROFILING NOW!!!!!!
      • RonaldT 10 mths ago
Everyone must pass their carry-on baggage through the X-Ray machines. They knives were in his carry-on bag. It wouldn't matter if it was the Pope, YOU CANNOT HAVE WEAPONS IN YOUR CARRY-ON BAGS ON A PLANE.

Why would you want to change something that worked?
They caught the guy without racial profiling
        did you miss that?

If it didn't cost $50 to have a checked bag they probably would of been checked....

Remember that WHITE man that smashed a plane into an IRS office? Why wasn't he charged with terrorism? Why doesn't anyone even MENTION that story anymore? Oh yea because white people don't commit terror.
      • Chris 10 mths ago
its not terror if no one really cares about the IRS? LOL
      • Adam 10 mths ago
He died...and YES, it was an act of terror. He also didn't do it for Jihad....or Mohammad - he was simply pissed at the IRS/Government; he wasn't out to employ mass destruction and dead to INNOCENT CIVILIANS.

        That's the difference.
      • Belinda 10 mths ago
Why wasn't he charged with terrorism? Because he died on impact! Duh!
    • Trevor  •  10 mths ago
The likelihood that this scenario actually occurred is slim to none. This is simple TSA boosting their "image" via a poorly constructed media campaign. LOL

Hmm, it makes me ashamed to be called an American when someone like you rears their head. *sigh* You must be one of those typical "Yankees" I've heard about lately.
      • Trevor 10 mths ago
lol. Wow, I just blew my milk out of my nose I laughed so hard. You hit the nail right on the head there calling yourself an American Ray! Congratulations. Now be a good little American and go lead your Country to success...lol

So, all their high tech wizardry and "hands on" approach find nothing and they find these knives by.....that's right folks, the same old tech they were using when I flew as a kid in the 70's. Way to go!
      • ME 10 mths ago
What? They were in his carry on bags which go through a separate scanner.....He wasn't wearing them on his body. HE probably wanted to wear them, but knowing the body scanner was present (the fact that no one is spared) probably caused him to be stupid and pull this move....Thinking is really not that hard...the Body scanners sole purpose is to INTIMIDATE....
      • WAT 10 mths ago
Thinking isn't that hard. Read it again. I never implied he had anything on his body. My point is their body scanners and pat downs have been hugely unsuccesful and the "old ways" work just fine. You'll never catch everything even with all the new tech short of completely stripping and running an MRI over each passenger, pilot, employee so it's pointless other than as a means to scare the public and make them cling to mother government for protection.

Exactly! The traditional ways of searching our carry ons work just fine. All this sexual assault on children and violation of our constitutional rights and persons is totally unnecessary. I won't fly until they knock it off! Even with family emergencies I have been EXTREMELY hesitant to fly. Having your constitutional rights violated by THE GOVERNMENT that is supposed to be governed by the constitution is extremely unnerving and evidential of a fascist state.

You put it in your "checked" baggage you putz!

When it comes to the TSA we are suppose to believe that the sacrifice of Liberty is required for our safety...meanwhile NO solutions about the USA borders....NOTHING is done about our borders and NOTHING is truely done about the illegals coming into the USA via the southern border.....Is it just me but if someone can do that couldn't someone just waltz over the border with God knows what??...biological/ chemical weapons etc???...meanwhile we US "born" citizens get groped, scanned and patted down at airports???
    • Old Soldier  •  10 mths ago
Who was carrying it? Was it the 11 month old baby, the 79 year old lady with cancer, or the 82 year old WWII vet carrying his MOH?
    • Thomas Dixon  •  10 mths ago
Wait, I looked up his first and middle name and they are both Arabic names. Having Arabic names or being of Arabic origin doesn't make anyone a criminal or a terrorist BUT being named Amr Gamel and trying to bring knives onto an airplane in the United States is about the most stupid thing anyone has ever done.
    • Nicholas R  •  10 mths ago
He says he collects knives. What dude you only collect #$%$ $5 knives? Not one of those could be purchased for more than $20 in any market on earth. If you collect knives you already know all the rules of transporting them long before you get to the airport. Like me I collect guns. I don't fly either. I can travel with all of my goodies through most states. I know which ones I can't and I never drive through them.
    • NYCman  •  10 mths ago
The same old luggage check found this that's been in airports for years. Why are they pretending this is a TSA success?
    • Welcome to the USSA  •  10 mths ago
They keep testing the system and no one seems to care or notice. Bring back common sense profiling YESTERDAY. Stop focusing on infants and 85 year old cripples and strip search every muslim that dares enter an airport,
    • Yermeyahu  •  10 mths ago
Amr Gamal Shedid: Now, I'm not profiling here but doesn't that name alone sound just a tad on the middle eastern side? Anyway, not to be accused of racism, if our friend Amr is indeed a "knife collector", why didn't he just stow them with his checked luggage?
    • Mark  •  10 mths ago
At the same time the TSA had 25,000 breaches in security. I guess for them to do their job one must carry a barrage of weapons.
    • Kuhullan  •  10 mths ago
I would like to know if any of his friends were on the flight. Thirteen guys with knives could do a lot of damage, and of course the PC crowd don't let pilots or flight attendants carry weapons. Hope they check his phone records for the last 24 months.
    • Mark  •  10 mths ago
Please try to imagine my complete and utter surprise that the knives belong to a Mr. Amr Gamal Shedid and not a six year old girl or a 85 year old grandmother in a wheelchair.

As far as the TSA goes, kudos... but as dysfunctional as you are remember that even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then.
    • MichaelPrav  •  10 mths ago
Collects knives? Yeah sure with a name like Amr Gamal Shedid.
    • Mike  •  10 mths ago
OMG, now the ACLU and other rights groups will say the poor Muslim was targeted because of his religion. Declare Muslim Faith a terrorist organization and round all up, and send them back to the desert. It's a matter of national security.
