Tucson school district to dismantle ethnic studies

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A school district in Tucson voted to dismantle its ethnic studies program after more than $1 million of monthly state funding was to be cut off in response to conclusions by Arizona's public schools chief and a judge that the program violated the law.

The Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/yyTSjC ) reports that the 4-1 vote Tuesday by the Tucson Unified School District means courses in the district's Mexican-American Studies program will cease immediately.

Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal last week ordered that 10 percent of the district's monthly state aid, amounting to more than $1 million per month, be withheld until the district follows the law.

Huppenthal concluded during the summer that the program violated the law. The district appealed Huppenthal's earlier findings, and an administrative law judge in December upheld the decision by the schools chief.

The judge ruled that the program violated state law by having one or more classes designed primarily for one ethnic group, promoting racial resentment and advocating ethnic solidarity instead of treating students as individuals.

All board members supported revamping either the program or some classes so they are more comprehensive and include the contributions of all ethnicities.

Board member Adelita Grijalva, the dissenting vote, called for the district to continue to defend the program in court and to challenge the law's constitutionality.

"This is an issue that is not going to go away by this vote. When bad laws are written, they are usually picked up by other states. This is an opportunity to fight a bad law," she said.

John Pedicone, the district's superintendent, said students will be transferred to existing traditional courses without jeopardizing class credits.

While the board voted to accept Huppenthal's finding and dismantle the program, the district has long held that it is not in violation of the law.

A group of Mexican American Studies educators and students who independently challenged the law suffered a blow in federal court.

A federal judge on Tuesday denied their request for an order to stop Huppenthal from taking further action against the district until their lawsuit is settled.

Judge A. Wallace Tashima also ruled their case may continue but dismissed claims filed by the teachers, saying they had no standing in the case because they could not prove that they would suffer irreparable harm.

But the judge will hear claims from at least one student identified as a plaintiff in the lawsuit. The student has registered to take Mexican American Studies courses and will not be able to do so now that the courses have been eliminated.

It was never ethnic studies , it was Mexican studies, to make it fair, if we had studies for every ethnic group these "kids' would graduate around age 45. We don't have high school Irish/Italian/German/Russian etc. studies, why single out Mexican?
      • Santoni 4 mths ago
Good question and maybe you can answer why everything is interpreted in Spanish only and not Italian, French, etc oh and last but not least English. The answer may be surprising but not totally. Could it be that people from south of our border are slow learners?

We need to give them something that might suggest their failed culture is worth something!

Instead of ethnic studies why doesn't the school district institute an ethics studies, the youth of today can sure use it.
      • Johno 4 mths ago
Why don't they just teach the skills the students will need to be successful US CITIZENS! Most of the students in these so called "Ethnic Studies"" classes can't even speak English!
      • Jesse 4 mths ago
these school districts clearly have no morals or ethics so it's probably hard for them to teach it to others.

If they took American History, they would know we conquered that land AFTER SPAIN DECLARED WAR ON THE USA. Spain being the empire that colonized most of the Southern States, Central, and South America. It's why they speak spanish.

Promoting one race above another is wrong...period. I don't care what color your are.

Now, why do they still spend school and city tax dollars to celebrate cinco de mayo, a mexican victory over the french in 1862? Do their french heritage students get to celebrate with tax dollars Sept 16, 1863 when the french defeated mexican forces?
      • Santoni 4 mths ago
That's next. Once the rest of our country does away with the Mexican American studies this should follow or at least I hope. Can you imagine Mexico having firework displays for us on the 4th of July? They'd laugh.
      • Richard T 4 mths ago
The Hispanics do not make a big deal out of the 5th of May. It's the Americans that us it as a drinking excuse that made Cinco de Mayo a huge ordeal

My grandfather was born in mexico, immigrated to usa and fought in wwII. He won the bronze star with valor. I do not need ethnic studies. Like my grandfather, I am proud to be an American and feel that America's good outweighs its bad

Why is it racist when you want to see people cut off who worked all their lives get a social security check, but walking across the border and dropping an anchor baby is OK for taxes they never contributed for?

How about putting resources towards teaching the "ethnic studies" courses into teaching the participants English?
    • JoeTheTrueProgressiveLibe ...  •  San Francisco, California  •  4 mths ago
Replacing studying Mexicans with a core skill like Chemistry/Physics/Math is a no brainer.

Its madatory for our kids here in Texas to take spanish class but no mandate for the kids to learn english..they go into one of these classes..It is very frustrating..

Whatever nation has the best grasp of both science and economics will rule the new century. That could be us.

But we will only reach this worthy goal if we prevent the demagogues in public education from derailing what should be a strident national cause!! We have critical need of science education, and no room for mandated bigotry!!

The TUSD decision was a good one.

Good news! This is America people, why the hell are we wasting time and money with Ethnic Studies anyway? Let's concentrate on English Studies, okay? I see plenty of young people every day who could use some English teaching.

Hispanic students were allowed to take this course instead of U.S. History. It taught that white people stole all the land from Mexico, that Hispanic people need to stick together against other races, and that white people are oppressing Hispanic people. It taught hate and division. The schools have other ethnic studies courses, but they don't try to stir up racial tension as this course did.

I took a black studies class in college once. I was the only white student and the instructor was openly belligerent. She tried to give me an F for the class. I tricked her into discussing why she gave me an F when I had completed every assignment early and had parrotted back all of the black racist propaganda back to her in every test and assignment.

She stupidly blurted out, "Because you white!" The Department Head who had suggested I take the class had walked up behind her. I got an A, just like every black kid in the class.
    • Sarafina  •  Phoenix, Arizona  •  4 mths ago
Perhaps these kids who want to take that class are very unhappy living in the U.S. and are just waiting to graduate so they can move to their beloved Mexico, I'm sure Mexico has college classes they can take when they get there.
