Turkey Earthquake: Hundreds Dead as Rescue Workers Dig Out

Hundreds of rescue workers worked through the night attempting to dig out survivors after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey, leveling dozens of buildings and killing hundreds.

Aftershocks with magnitudes of up to 6.0 were felt within 10 hours of when the quake hit Sunday afternoon. Turkey's interior minister Idris Naim Sahin said Monday that the death toll had risen to 270, but an estimated 1,000 people could have been killed based on the size of the quake, according to The Associated Press.

Sahin said that 80 multi-story buildings collapsed in the town of Ercis, with people trapped in 40 of them.

"Rescue work is ongoing, especially at buildings where [rescuers] have determined survivors," Sahin said.

The temblor's epicenter was in the village of Tabanli, near the city of Van close to the Iranian border, the AP reported.

    Related: Major quakes of 2011

With a population of 75,000, Ercis was the hardest hit by the quake; about 55 miles south, Van sustained major damage. Turkey is highly susceptible to earthquakes as it sits on major geological fault lines.

The quake, which hit at 1:41 p.m. local time, was upgraded from a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 to 7.3 magnitude. The U.S. Geological Survey later revised the magnitude to 7.2.

The depth of the epicenter was considered shallow -- 12.4 miles, shallower than the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January 2010 -- and more potentially destructive, combined with the poor building codes in the region.

According to the Hakki Erskoy with the Turkish Red Crescent, there were at least 120 aftershocks on Sunday. Erskoy said that the high number aftershocks isn't affecting the search and rescue efforts, as most of the families have moved from their homes and settled in tents.

Residents spent the night outdoors and lit campfires, while others sought shelter with relatives in nearby villages.

Most of these buildings in the affected part of Turkey are not built up to code. Turkey does have fairly stringent building codes but a lot of the buildings are just ignored or they are not enforced. It is estimated that only one-third of buildings in Turkey comply with codes.

The city of Van's mayor Bekir Kaya told NTV television that the "telephone system is jammed due to panic and we can't assess the entire damage immediately."

State-run media reported rescue crews were working to free people who were trapped under a seven-story building that collapsed.

Residents of Van and neighboring towns poured into the streets as the strong aftershocks rocked the area Sunday.

"There are many people under the rubble," district mayor Celebibag Veysel Keser told NTV. "People are in agony, we can hear their screams for help. We need urgent help."

Some 1,275 rescue teams from 38 provinces were being sent to the region according to officials.

The last major earthquake to hit the country was in 1999, when 18,000 people were killed, according the AP.

President Obama said Sunday he has been following the reports on the quake.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the brave men and women who are working to bring assistance to this stricken region. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Turkish ally in this difficult time, and are ready to assist the Turkish authorities," Obama said in a statement.

ABC News Radio and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I live in Southern California, USA, and have been through several quakes. Building codes exist for a reason, not to make the government money but to protect the people from death in such instances. Certainly any such disaster is sad. It is also sad that so many buildings were not up to code. Still, it is understandable why some buildings werent. We can provide aid as necessary, but we also should prepare ourselves lest we find that we become the next victims of such a tragedy.

Turkey, China, Mexico.... that problem exists in almost every developing country when there's a quake. Most are unable and/or willing to enforce strict building codes (it even happens in developed ones sometimes, as South Korea had to practically rebuild Seoul in the 1995 after a shopping mall collapse exposed widespread building corruption.) It's even worse when they hit undeveloped/weak government countries like Haiti. It's sad so many people continue to become victims of greedy cost-cutting urbanization that governments don't notice or turn a blind eye to in their own disires to cut costs.

Yep, government regulations exist for a reason. Without them, I'm sure some developers would construct buildings that wouldn't last a second in a 6.0 quake.

Unfortunately, not all countries have buildings less than 30 years old. Building codes were a little laxer 500 years ago.

Why are people turning a tradgedy into a religious debate?
My prayers go to the Turkish people. It matters not if they are my religion or not.

If you're referring to the location pop-up box, Yahoo doesn't need that to know who we are or where we are .... can trace our IP addresses as soon as we enter the Yahoo realm IF they are so inclined. That the public can see the location, that is an entirely different privacy issue. However, I'm sure most posters have figured out how to make sure that the location shown isn't their 'real' location anyway.

I have no problem with people that choose to believe that a Jewish zombie that was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and drink his blood and telepathically tell him that you accept him so that he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in all humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magic tree. Why would you not pray that he heals you or that he stops washing Japanese people away like pretzels in an earth quake. Let's all clasp hands and form a circle.

Goodness many posters act like large earthquakes havent always been a part of living on this planet...I mean this 7.2 was a nasty shaker but, still nothing compared to what went on in Japan or in southeast Asia when the earthquakes also caused tsunamis. This region in Turkey is known for its volcanic activity and historically they have had worse. I am sure Turkey will be o.k. though. Every time people hear about these natural disasters they want to attribute it to some religious movement....It gets really old. People have been collapsing and rebuilding on this planet for literally hundreds of thousands of years...so not much has changed except the fact that the building got bigger and maybe werent built as sturdy...Turkey from what I have understood doesnt have the same codes for building as say the US or Japan does so naturally their buildings which are older and more prone to collapsing will do just that. Same thing happened in Spain and that earthquake was quite small. The ages of many of those buildings played a part in the destruction of that area though. In many cases even building codes wont save you from a collapse and as humans just like our ancestors survived them we will to.

Many of you are missing the point. With deepest respect for the lost, Turkey itself is to blame for the deaths, because after hundreds of quakes and thousands of deaths, they continue to rebuild ( at the same locations ) without using earthquake proof standards. They have the technology, so there is no excuse...
