TV Ratings: ‘Gotham’ Viewership Doubles in 30-Day Ratings as Time-Shifting Diversifies
Fox’s latest 30-day ratings report tracks a predictable spike in time-shifted viewing of “Gotham” over the monthlong frame.
But the numbers for Fox’s multiplatform viewing report covering the season through Nov. 2 also indicate the growing diversity of platforms delivering significant audience to the 30-day total. Viewing done via Fox.com, Hulu.com and cable VOD sources accounts for 17% of viewing in the 30-day period, up from 13% in the comparable period last year.
Within the streaming segment, Hulu remains the big driver of viewing for Fox shows but the authenticated Fox Now app has posted a 52% year-to-year gain.
For the season to date, the Batman origins story “Gotham” is Fox’s biggest multiplatform mover, gaining 135% over its Live-Plus-Same Day average to reach 15.9 million viewers per episode. On just Fox.com, Hulu and cable VOD, “Gotham” picks up 3.3 million viewers from day 4 after premiere telecast through day 30. That number is significant because Fox and other networks typically don’t see any additional coin from advertisers once viewing of a program is done outside of the Live Plus 3 frame that is the basis for most TV ad pacts.
“Family Guy” remains Fox’s second-biggest gainer. The show commands some 36% of its 30-day audience of 11.7 million viewers from Fox.com and Hulu alone.
Among other nuggets from the report:
Comedies have pluck: “New Girl” (5.9 mil) gains 133% in multiplatform viewing, up from 120% last year, while “The Mindy Project” (4.5 mil) is seeing a 96% lift, up from 87% last year. This is notable as both shows are seeing declines in live ratings. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is seeing a 70% lift.
On digital platforms, the top three Fox series are “Gotham” (3.3 mil), “Family Guy” (2.8 mil) and “New Girl” (1.8 mil).
