U.N. Mali troops open fire on protesters, 1 dead: witnesses

DAKAR (Reuters) - United Nations peacekeepers in the northern Malian town of Gao killed at least one person when they used live rounds to disperse protesters outside a base in the town, two witnesses said. The U.N. mission was not immediately available to comment but it earlier confirmed peacekeepers had fired tear gas to prevent crowds from storming the base. One witness said he saw a dead protester who had been shot in the face. A second witness said he saw four dead taken into Gao hospital. Medical officials there were not immediately available for comment.
