UC-Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi Denies Resignation, Says the 'University Needs Me'

University of California-Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi says she won't resign despite outrage over her handling of campus officers' blasting pepper spray into the faces of students protesting Friday in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

"I really feel confident at this point the university needs me," Katehi said today on "Good Morning America." "There are so many critical issues to be addressed and we really need to start the healing process and move forward."

Calls for Katehi's resignation have come fast and furious from both students and faculty since the incident, video of which shows as many as 20 students, all seated throughout the protest, were hit at close range by pepper spray. Two of the protesters were taken to the hospital. Ten people were arrested, nine of them students.

The chancellor's office confirmed to ABC News that UC officials will announce later today they have placed campus police chief Annette Spicuzza on administrative leave. Chief Spicuzza was on the scene when the pepper spray incident occurred.

Katehi initially voiced support for campus police, who wore riot gear during the standoff, having given them the order to dismantle the UC-Davis Occupy encampment because camping on college grounds is officially forbidden.

"The situation that was building up was becoming a concern for us, the members of the community," Katehi said on "GMA." "The decision was not to disperse the students but to dismantle the equipment for the encampment, and there was an effort for many, many days."

The UC-Davis faculty association called for Katehi's resignation Saturday, writing in a letter there had been a "gross failure of leadership."

Admitting that the university she leads is at a "critical position," Katehi said she is willing to work with all sides.

"I'm working with the greater faculty body," she said. "I really want to work with members of our community, the staff and the faculty to take our institution out of this crisis."

Katehi has said she next plans to meet with demonstrators today at their general assembly.

Questioned on "GMA" that the situation in which pepper spray was used did not appear to be violent, Katehi responded, "Exactly."

She said, however, that her priority, and that of the university's, is to protect the students.

"It was a difficult situation for the campus to really strive to make sure the students are safe," she said. "The biggest, most critical issue is the safety of the students who are using the campus, the facilities, who really want to learn in this environment."

Katehi's statements follow a weekend of damage-control for both her and the university as the incident reverberated across the nation.

The school placed two of the campus police officers identified on video using the pepper spray on administrative leave.

Katehi held a teleconference Saturday and released a statement in which she said she takes "full responsibility for the incident."

She also announced she would form a task force to probe events surrounding the arrests, and then accelerated its timetable, setting a deadline from 90 days to 30 days for the task force to issue its report.

Katehi said the task force will be chosen this week, and will include faculty, students and staff.

"This video is horrible," Katehi told "GMA." "It really shows a face for the university that we don't have. It's really critical for us to understand what happened and to try to make the appropriate corrections so this doesn't happen again."

After the UC-Davis Occupy was disassembled Friday, students resumed their protest Saturday with an evening rally on the roughly 31,000-student campus.

Local media reported that Katehi remained in a media room for more than two hours after her news conference Saturday as protesters waited outside. She reportedly took a back exit to her waiting SUV, walking past a three-block-long group of students who, in a coordinated effort, remained silent.

ABC News' Alyssa Newcomb, Katti Gray and Dean Schabner contributed to this report.

Her $400,000 salary? This is what is wrong the college education system, too many big salaries, and nobody teaching.

Wish I could give you 10 thumbs up.

Not enough people are talking about the bloated salaries at universities. Might it have something to do with tuition going up 300% in real terms over 20 years.

400k is steep for that school. i can see UCLA or Cal .. but Davis? i actually think we need to shut down sports programs at Universities all over the country. its just big business for ESPN and other media. its not for the benefit of anyone else, least of all the young adults playing the games

Wait till you see the millions schools pay for basketball or football coaches. Thats not even mentioning private planes some schools take to fly their players to tournaments.

I really feel confident that the university needs me to accept my absurd salary for doing...anything I can to make sure that I am well taken care of and that students don't speak out, that our police are safe to point their guns at our students because if they left the campus who knows what would happen. What? They left and nothing happened. I walked out peacefully. Oops. Nevermind. My paycheck please.

Linda you're already gone. You just haven't accepted it yet. Trust me, you are done!

Why do the Presidents of universities have to be paid $300,000, $400,000 and up (along with how many other administrators). That is why tuition rates keep rising faster than inflation does.

VP joe biden called the Tea party Te RRORISTS. Eric Cantor R called the Occupy "the mob". I do not believe this. Linda Katehi is a Te RRORIST ! These are patriots you are spraying. They are peaceful. To call Occupy names like hicks, underemployed, druggies, racists, anti semites, smelly, etc is just not true. How does the news know everyone in the crowd ?

I wish you were right. Unfortunately, UC administrators rise by bureaucratic means (i.e. without real achievements) and never leave when they should. The Regents and President's Office rarely/never get involved.

Now that the word Communism has lost its cache, the dirty word is SOCIALIST is all that is left to label so-called-liberals. Wooooohooooo, so scary, those nasty socialist might open a free clinic, run buses to your neighborhood and provide affordable childcare to working parents. Its shocking! But is it actually evil? Say, like a guy who sexually harasses women and/or steals retirement funds from employees? I guess only a liberal would.

Despite her best intentions she has sadly lost the respect and trust of faculty and students and needs to go, either by stepping down or simply being let being let go.
      Decisions have consequences.

Well said! I will be there at 12:00 noon to hear what she has to say to the students, Alumni, Staff, Community and Stakeholders. Hope she says she's going to honor our wishes and resign!

What an ego. This woman should have been more involved in the situation as the head of this university. She said the purpose of the security force is to keep the students safe on campus. Exactly what danger were the protestors posing when the police attacked them with Pepper Spray? The University does not need her, she likely needs the fat salary and benefit package and the other perks that go along with the title Chancellor.
    • prestonh  •  6 mths ago
The school doesn't need HER, it needs someone but not HER specifically. She didn't look out for the schools students and those are the people that later in life will be asked to donate back to the school. She's damaged the schools future. Alumni's pay the bills.
    • Tangaloa T  •  6 mths ago
She doesn't know what she's saying for one thing. How can you say her first priority was to protect students when she allowed them cops to pepper spray student demonstrators like that. If you cant do your job right its time for you to vacate the position chancellor .
    • Pepou14  •  6 mths ago
She SHOULD resign. No one needs such a #$%$ as Chancellor.
    • THE COMMANDER  •  6 mths ago
Hosing weaponless students in the face with mace. No Chancellor Linda Katehi, the university DOES NOT NEED YOU!!!

I guess when you get to a position in life where you are able to circumvent the Constitution of the United States you must be a very special person, in your own mind. Us normal people can't expect to have the right to a peace assembly, or the freedom of speech, what where we thinking. You gotta have a membership to the Country Club for those rights.

She defamed the University, depreciated the value and prestige of a UC diploma, embarrassed America and UC worldwide (these videos were shown in China and Russia as examples of American brutality and hypocracy), and almost surely reduced alumni cointributions to zero. Now she claims the University needs her. Why? To set up a task force to investigate. She doesn't need to resign. She needs to be fired to send a message that the kind of brutality that we decry in other countries we don't tolerate in America.

We give extraordinary power to the police. In return, we expect extraordinary restraint. The violent abuse by armed police against peaceful, defenseless protestors exercising their 1st Amendment rights is a compete failure and abuse of power by the police, their commander and the University President. The police should be fired and prosecuted and their commander and the President should resign in disgrace.

She's right. The entire UC Davis system would come crashing to a halt without Katehi. Students would go into memory lapse, and the faculty would lose interest in teaching. This woman is full of herself.
    • jnathanr  •  6 mths ago
She's pretty ARROGANT! Hey, Linda, here is a hit; no one is irreplacable.
    • Bradley  •  6 mths ago
Linda, U C Davis did just fine before you were there and it will do just fine after you are gone.
    • Amorpheous  •  6 mths ago
Chancellor Linda Katehi is expert at doing the "sad-face" when in the hot-seat for her policies and decisions that led to the voluminous pepper spaying of completely docile students. But this emotional gambit does not excuse her professional decisions. One would expect MUCH better thinking from someone being paid $400,000 a year.

'University Needs Me' - says who? you? Sorry, 'University don't need you'. You are so gone, pepper spray on students? Its horrible to watch as a parent.

what she "needs" is a reality check. all the other UC regents and board members need one too.
