United Football League founder attorney wants lawsuit seeking back pay for players thrown out
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The attorney for United Football League founder and chairman William Hambrecht asks that a lawsuit seeking millions of dollars in back pay for players be dismissed.
Some 78 plaintiffs say they haven't received any of the pay agreed upon in their contracts or in signed "personal guarantees" by Hambrecht. All played for the Omaha (Neb.) Nighthawks and Las Vegas Locomotives. The league also had teams in Norfolk, Va., and Sacramento, Calif.
Hambrecht attorney Kristen Gallagher wrote in court papers that player contracts require pay disputes to be arbitrated by the UFL's Football Advisory Committee, not the courts. Players' attorney Andrew Rempfer said no such committee exists and called the motion "flimsy."
A hearing is set for next month in Las Vegas. The UFL folded in October because of financial problems.
