Is this the 'ugliest, nastiest, dirtiest' campaign ever?

An onslaught of unusually vicious attack ads has defined the Republican primary battles, and the mudslinging might only get worse

Negative campaign commercials are everywhere this election year, thanks largely to the Supreme Court's controversial Citizens United decision allowing wealthy individuals and corporations to spend as much as they like on political advertising via super PACS. Mitt Romney flattened Newt Gingrich in Tuesday's Florida primary, and many commentators are crediting attack ads questioning Newt's conservatism and ethics. Such vicious character attacks are likely just a warm-up to an even dirtier back-and-forth with President Obama in the general election. Is this turning into the nastiest campaign the U.S. has ever seen?

Yes, 2012 is about destroying the opponent's image: Without doubt, we're "on the cusp of the ugliest, nastiest, dirtiest campaign in American history," says Michael Scherer at TIME. Romney's attacks are already being mirrored by President Obama's team, which has issued a tweet mocking the likely GOP nominee for reportedly transporting his dog in a cage on top of his car, painting Romney as "uncaring." The candidates seem to agree that their "paths to victory run straight through destroying their opponents’ reputations."
"The Obama campaign's humorous dog whistle"

It doesn't have to be this way: The courts have made it clear that "uprooting super PACS from the political landscape is a fool's errand," says Kathleen Hall Jamieson at CNN, but "making their deceptive televised claims vanish is easier." TV and radio stations have to air federal candidates' ads uncensored, but they "have the right to insist on the accuracy" of super PAC ads. They might lose money by saying no to "misleading third-party ads," but the public's gratitude should make up for it.
"How to tame super PAC ads"

Actually, from a historical perspective, the ads are not that bad: Don't be taken in by all the "hand-wringing," says Doug Mataconis at Outside the Beltway. Yes, the creation of deep-pocketed super PACs has put more ads on the air, but not all negative ads are "dirty." There's nothing inherently wrong with hitting "your opponent when he does something you don't like" to spotlight a weakness. Besides, the smears against Grover Cleveland in 1888 (over an alleged illegitimate child) and others in the campaigns of 1800 and 1860 were far worse than anything we're seeing today.

If the Supreme court wanted a divided country, they got it.

It's not the content of the ads, but the saturation of the airwaves.

Come about July, I'm either going to turn the TV off or over to pay TV exclusively so I don't have to see them.

This is not even close, we are just inundated with information as it happens via mass media. In the past (3 decades ago or more) most of this stuff would not even make it to the News paper never mind the TV and Cable.

Does anyone remember what the real issues are any more? Or are you all just going to waste your time - and money - with name-calling and whining?
      • fsh4evr 3 mths ago
Hey wasting everything and whining about it is a god given right and the american way of life. So stop wasting electricity and whining about everything

The american people should insist (through voting) that the Supreme Court reverse it's decision. What we need in this country is not more strife and mud-slinging, but constructive
criticism and decent candidates running for office. Of course that isn't going to happen, I can
only imagine the rhetoric when it will be the republican candidate against Obama. Politics
is and will always be dirty, unethical and about money! HAPPY VOTING...............

You can't even decide who to vote for because they don't address the issues and problems we're facing. All they want to do is dig up dirt on each other, the dirtier the better, so the voters never get the full story on what they'll actually do once they get in office (besides line their own pockets.)

This is an election to determine who is going to lead one of the most powerful and enlightened nations of the world, and this is the caliber of candidates that are running? Just a bunch or egotistical jerks throwing around their money to make other candidates look bad in order to fulfil their own personal bucket list of being President of the United States. Should we be worried?

If the only way you can make yourself look half decent is by trying to make someone look worse than you, then you do not deserve to be president.

Waste of time and money. This could all be done in a lot shorter time, with a lot less #$%$ and spending. 15 million on advertising in florida by one candidate? Really? 15 million dollars just on advertising in that one state. Obviously he will "recoup" that money when he's elected x1000 no doubt, but still, that's just off the charts stupid.

The hounds of truth? OMG that is funny!!
      • William 3 mths ago
Susan - If you've been around as long as you indicate, you must remember the attack ads put out by your fellow Texan Lyndon Johnson in 1964. He put out some of the most vile ads I've ever seen, including the Daisy Girl, the KKK ad and the Ice Cream ad. Today's ads don't approach the nastyness of Johnson's.

what I dont understand is the blatant attacks between political candidates of the same party in primaries, and then the sudden reversal during the general election. Gingrich could say Mitt is not qualified to teach preschool, and then later state he is the best candidate ever.

No it is not, this is typical politics. Before, all of this was done behind the scenes with underhanded tactics and we never heard about them for the most part. Did we hear about acorn registering the cemetary vote during the election, did we hear about the physical threats years back to candidates by campaign managers and their thugs. They all have the same tactics, regardless of party, "none" of them are saints. They do and always will use whatever means necessary to win, legal or illegal. This even applies to the other political seats as well, local, state, and federal, we see it everyday in the buddy system all of them use.

Politics as usual. I retired from a local Gov't Agency and was appalled at the antics of the County Supervisors and other positions that were appointed by the voters.

Rasmussen Reports, the conservative polling organization, has Obama up by 4% in their most recent national survey data:
      Obama 47%
      Romney 43%

It too far away until November 7th, Those numbers today dont mean siht
      • William 3 mths ago
47% for a sitting President is not good. Especially for a Democrat because Republican counts are usually come out lower than they actually are.

"An onslaught of unusually vicious attack ads has defined the Republican primary battles, and the mudslinging might only get worse" - This is disgusting! These are supposed to be our leaders... cough, cough, laugh, laugh... role modeling hate and slander! Absolutely shameful! I thought we should be teaching our children differently, I guess I'm a rebel!

The reason why this country can not produce qualified candidates, is that a sensible person does not want to put theirselves and their family through all the hogwash that the average candidate produces. Tell me HONESTLY what you plan to do and how. If I have been paying attention, I already know what you and your opponents have already done.
