UK and US Will Stage Fake Nuclear Power Plant Attack To Test Defences

The UK and U.S. governments will stage a fake attack on a nuclear power station later this year in order to the test defences.

The joint ‘war games’ will test the resilience of existing nuclear power plants to a terrorist attack.

The staged attack is not a response to a specific threat but is just ‘prudent planning’, Westminster sources told The Guardian.

At a security summit in Washington D.C this week, British Prime Minister David Cameron and U.S. President Barack Obama will discuss ‘scenario planning’ to protect nuclear facilities from damage and prevent any nuclear resources falling into the hands of terrorists.

A similar simulation was carried out last year in order to test the readiness of major banks in the face of a cyber-terrorist attack.

Up to £2million is due to spent on boosting the UK’s cyber defences over the next five years, says the Ministry of Defence.

As part of the update, the UK will team up with the U.S Navy to improve the safety of the Trident nuclear missile system.
