UK lawmakers complain over Jay Leno joke

LONDON (AP) — British lawmakers say Prime Minister David Cameron should complain to the United States over a Jay Leno routine which joked about the holiest site in the Sikh religion.

In a motion published at Parliament on Thursday, two legislators said Leno had shown a complete misunderstanding of the Sikh faith.

Leno made a joke on Jan. 19 on the "Tonight Show" in the U.S., when he showed a photo of an impressive gold building and claimed it was Republican Mitt Romney's summer home.

The site was actually the Golden Temple, a revered Sikh site.

British opposition Labour Party lawmakers Virendra Shrama and John McDonnell proposed a motion demanding Cameron call on the U.S. to show more respect toward Sikhs.

The move does not compel Cameron to take any action.

Ask the Sikh community if they would prefer the treatment of the British colonial rule or a joke not intended to offend?

Get over it - it was a joke... Why is it it's ok to make fun of any other race or religion but not them... don't like it don't watch...You come to the US to go to school etc..but then think you are above the rest of us? We have rights and one is to decide what and whom we watch or talk to...

It's a joke folks, he's a comedian. That's what comedians do, they make jokes. This was a US show, not a British show. It must be wonderful in England that the PM has no more inportant issues to deal with than an American comedians joke.

It was just a potshot taken at a presidential candidate who is known to be independently wealthy. The building was gold domed, and that is why the picture was shown. There was nothing pejorative intended toward the Sikh religion. It could have been any other magnificent palace or temple.

the golden palace makes great dumplings and mooshe pork.

Some people need to get a sense of humor and thicker skin. Nothing else to worry about in England?

Get over yourself.....the muslim population in London alone looks to be more than in Muslim countries....trying to be politically correct and all that? I think it was funny and he made his point about Romney..The Brits need to chill !!!!!

always confused me a bit ,all these religions saying donate to charity and help the poor, then they build extravagant palaces and temples like its an episode of pimp my religion and don't have enough humility to have a sense of humor about it.

As if Monty Python shows any religion respect. Its only a building. These sikhs are too thin skinned. It may be holy for them but not the wide majority of people in the world. In the same light how holy is the Vatican to a sikh? And why is some Brit worried what Leno has to joke about.

Maybe Romney's renting the building to the Sikhs

The joke's target was Mitt Romney, not the Sikh religion. In no way did Jay Leno insult the religion. Are these British politicians that are pushing this really that stupid?

so many people are so easily insulted and thin-skinned its pathetic..it was a JOKE and had nothing whatsoever to do with that religion...he just needed a picture of a gold house..such wimps and mental weaklings

I propose a motion for the French consulate to tell Cameron to go away, or we shall fart in his general direction and taunt him with another Golden Palace picture. Seriously, people have too much time on their hands. How many Brits watch Jay Leno? None that I know. When did they become the "inappropriate usage of a PICTURE police?" Maybe we can get the religion of peace to publish a fatwa, condeming the joke.

Here's a message for those two members of brittish parliament. We told you and your precious crown to go stuff it in 1776, You may not have a constitution that guarantees Free speech in it's first amendment, but WE DO!!!!! YOUR CRAP DOESN'T FLY HERE ANYMORE!!!!!! Worry about what's in your own backyard and not ours. Furthermore you can tell our job killing president that none of us respects whatever you want about whoever you want because under that first amendment we can tell him to go stuff it as well. Oh as for world war II and the fact that you can still speak English and not German, YOUR WELCOME!!!!

If they had shown the Taj Mahal or the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, would it be better? Lighten up and learn to laugh at a joke that was done in good spirited fun.......
