UK TV chef caught shoplifting from supermarket

LONDON (AP) — A celebrity chef apologized on his website Monday after he was caught shoplifting from a supermarket.

Antony Worrall Thompson was arrested Friday after reportedly stealing cheese and wine from a Tesco store in the posh riverside town of Henley-on-Thames, west of London.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman who asked not to be identified because of force policy said there had been five separate offenses over the Christmas holidays, leading to an arrest on Friday.

In a statement on his website, the 60-year-old Worrall Thompson, who has appeared on daytime cookery show "Ready Steady Cook," said he was sorry for his misdeeds.

"I am so sorry for all my recent stupid and irresponsible actions; I am of course devastated for my family and friends, whom I've let down and will seek the treatment that is clearly needed," he said. "I am not the first, and I certainly won't be the last person to do something without rhyme or reason — what went through my head, only time will tell."

Worrall Thompson also apologized to Tesco staff. His representatives declined to elaborate on this statement.

The Sun newspaper — in a front page story Monday — said he stole cheese and wine. The newspaper, without citing any sources, said he had shoplifted on several occasions by using an automated self-checkout machine but not scanning all of the items.

Thames Valley Police issued Worrall Thompson with a formal caution — a written rebuke for a crime. Worrall Thompson will not face further charges but the caution can be mentioned in court if he has more trouble with the law.

Many programs designed to help shoplifters curb their impulses regard it as a psychological problem that can sometimes be treated with therapy and medication, including antidepressants. Experts say it usually arises because of personal issues and conflicts, not poverty or greed.

Everyone has problems, but that doesn't mean it's okay to steal, especially if he could afford to pay, which I'm more than certain he could. Some people steal simply because they are thieves at heart.

The police issued him a formal caution known as "a written rebuke for a crime"? Does this mean that he was given a slap on the hand? So let me see.. IF he does this again, the written rebuke will show that he committed the crime before; which means he will then pay for his crime? Wow! Let's all go to the UK and do a crime since we can get away with it! Nah, it's better to be honest and um... NOT STEAL!

it would be nice if you held politicians to the same standards

It's called a non-violent crime. Something America has yet to grasp a hold of. In England you can get a "slap on the hand" if your crime was non-violent and they feel it was something you should learn to not do anymore after being caught. If you get busted again, however, your punishment would be more severe than if you would have been punished the first time. It's a way to show mercy to those who may have only strayed for a normally honest path. Learn your lesson and move on. In America we don't do that. Half a gram of Marijuana? 30 days in jail. Window have a crack in it? Get a $45 ticket. Walk across the street without using a Crosswalk? Yes, if your cop is a douche bag you will get a citation.

The article said he is a repeat offender, "he had shoplifted on several occasions by using an automated self-checkout machine but not scanning all of the items".

i agree with john b he is only sorry he got caught, what makes me angry is the fact that if this was someone on benefits shoplifting to feed their families, they would have the book thrown at them and they would also struggle to find a job because of it,yet awt, will no doubt laugh it off and be on tv soon joking about it,people who do it for the sake of it should have the book thrown at them, not someone forced to do it to feed their families.

Amazing. Another example of how the Rich Elite live by different rules than you and I. We would go to jail and get a harsh penalty. No wonder we all want to be rich!

This gentleman may have a psychological problem stemming from childhood trauma, and were he to make a public confession in front of the viewing public, and possibly cry on live television, it would help his recovery no doubt. It would also help him... make a purse full of money and boost the network ratings!!!!

Sadly, people actually believe your kind of logic. You should print a disclaimer! Good post.

If this was average Joe in the USA they would be jailed for shoplifting .Celebrity status must come with a universal forgiveness code for those who lie, cheat, and steal

No doubt he would be happy to pay three or four times the price of what he stole if it would make it go away.
