Ukraine: Activist protest arrival of US Navy ship

SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Anti-Western activists in southern Ukraine have protested the arrival of a U.S. Navy ship that will take part in joint military drills.

Some 100 mostly elderly protesters rallied in the Black Sea port of Sevastopol against Ukraine's cooperation with the U.S. and NATO.

The activists burned a mock American flag, shouted "Yankee Go Home" and hurled other insults upon the arrival of the Vella Gulf guided missile cruiser.

The ship will take part in anti-piracy and other drills with the Ukrainian navy.

Under President Viktor Yanukovych Ukraine gave up the goal of joining NATO, but continues military cooperation with the U.S. and other NATO members.

The military alliance remains unpopular among the majority of Ukrainians, especially in the pro-Russian east and south.

I am from Ukraine, and I am pretty sure that those old folks who live in horrible poverty got paid by someone for protesting. They are there to get paid, there is no other explanation for that stupidity. I doubt that they even know what Yankee means.

You may be from Ukraine but you are wrong .Those old people are hard line communists and don't trust american intentions .Most of that region is pro Russian .

Ha-ha...I am from that region, grew up on the Black Sea, so please don't try to feed me your propaganda.

Actually, try typing up reviews and the sites reputation before using this particular site so you'll understand the pro's and cons of it. This is basic protocol. I heard it was good, but you should still do the research.

Actually, I was looking at reviews and it seems pretty reputable. You need to look it up. Not sure what you mean by advice as in tips on using the internet to communicate with women. Just be caution (I mean, if you have no photo nor written info on yourself, there may be problems if you have attractive women calling at you "My future husband" (lol) and you'll be fine; Again, the reviews (both positive and negative) will help you. As for money, if you're really serious, just developed a good plan to clear your thoughs because it does take commitment, but I' saw some pictures of the women (out of curiousity) and I think it may be worth it. Just chose one (or two if necessary) that you like. This is just my opinion on the subject.

Embil is very right on the subject; One can go on here, but here not the place; Just look it up on the search engine. Preferably Ixquick (my favorite)

The Ukrainian people are for the most part so downtrodden by their own useless govt, they have no ill feelings towards America. I know people in Ukraine, I've been there...it is a country of great people, the majority of whom struggle daily just to survive. If you are an American who thinks you are poor, you dont know what poor is. There are basically NO social services there, but the people dont complain, they just endure. To those who criticize without knowing SQUAT about who you criticize...maybe you should consider keeping your mouth shut so you dont sound like a complete idiot. I'd love to go live in Ukraine, in the western region, below the Carpathian mountains...absolutely beautiful region, rivers with no dams, wildlife, and nice little villages with warm friendly people living simply. Nothing like that left in the US...anywhere.

I have only seen pictures of the Ukraine (especially Kiev) and it looks beautiful, natural scenery and architecture. Some people have an opposite image based on their own false perceptions of the nation. It would cost income to live over there however, but not an impossible task to accomplish.

        Well said.

Not so. True in Crimea where Sevastopal is, there are many Ukrainians and Russians there who dislike the U.S. But there are also many that look to the U.S. as a ray of hope, freedom and justice.
With the new generations evolving, the old Soviet mentality is waning. Having spent six summers there, I never had a problem. Indeed have made many friends. The future of Crimea is in a balance. With the protests in Moscow, this would be a huge turning point for Ukraine and Crimea.

I was there when the same thing happened a couple of years ago to a joint ukrainian/usa military program. When my wife who is a ukrainian asked the protesters why this was happening they told her they were paid directly from the russian military command there at their navy base. the russian boot is never far from the ukrainian throat...silly ukrainians, ukraine belongs to russia..just ask any russian.

Maybe they were hoping it would be a German Navy ship and they could celebrate the good old days of the 30's and 40's.

Elderly Ukrainians don't get into Politics, some one paid them ( in hard currency) to Protest
they would rather be home drinking tea. They don't call us "yankees" anyway. they call us amerykantsi
    • VICTOR  •  St Louis, Missouri  •  4 mths ago
Or the true story is that they were trying to defect out of Ukraine and get to the U.S. like gazillions of other Ukrainians have done and the Navy wouldn't let them board. Go Navy!

Sevastopol is populated by many Russians, mostly pensioniers who found themselves citizens of a foreign country- Ukraine in 1991. So, they are still yearning for USSR when they used to get good pensions and now they are stuck in a more or less US-aligned country. Also, Russia does not want them because they are not citizens of Russia. So, they are protesting. Just ignore.

I think this contingent in Ukraine is the minority by far. I've been to Ukraine, the people are warm and very friendly to Americans....especially the girls...OMG the girls are beautiful! I had a magnificent time, grandma cooked me the best borsch I ever had in my life. Rented a sweet little flat in Dnepropetrovsk for 42$ a night. Took 3 girls to dinner, drank 4 carafes of the best vodka I ever tasted, and the bill was less then 200$. Great country...lol.

people around the world don't know how much america has changed. it is no yankee land no more.

cowboys marry mexican women and eat taco.

kardashians are the new face of america.
    • Anthony  •  4 mths ago
      Mr.Jones,
It is very true. Ukrainian and Russian girls are very beautiful and nice. When I talk with them, it makes me believe god might exist. They make me feel manly.
American girls are mostly fat, stupid, or rude. They make me believe the devil exists.

"Yankee go home"... Really? The last Yankee dies out in the early 1900s. Are they talking about the baseball team?
