UN envoy says Syrian government, some rebel groups have agreed to truce

CAIRO - The UN-Arab League envoy to Syria says the Syrian government and some rebel leaders have agreed to a ceasefire during the upcoming Muslim four-day holiday.

Lakhdar Brahimi told reporters in Cairo today that the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad will issue a statement on accepting a truce today or Thursday.

The Eid al-Adha holiday begins Friday.

Brahimi didn't elaborate on how such a truce would be monitored.

The fighting in Syria has killed more than 34,000 people since March last year, according to activists.
