UN inspectors in Tehran for key talks over nuclear weapon allegations

TEHRAN, Iran - U.N. nuclear inspectors starting a two-day visit to Tehran on Monday sought to meet Iranian nuclear scientists and visit a key military facility as they try to gauge allegations that Iran is pushing toward making an atomic weapon.

The trip is the second in less than a month by the International Atomic Energy Agency team, reflecting growing concerns over alleged weapons experiments — something Iran has so far both denied and refused to discuss.

Herman Nackaerts, a senior U.N. nuclear official, said in Vienna before the team departed on Sunday that he hoped for progress in the talks but his careful choice of words suggested little expectation the meeting will be successful.

The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is geared toward making weapons, a charge Iran denies, insisting it's for peaceful purposes only, such as power generation.

Iran's state radio said Monday the inspectors hope to meet Iranian nuclear scientists and visit the Parchin military complex. The report said the IAEA had requested to visit Parchin, an Iranian military base and conventional weapons development facility outside of Tehran. The site has also been suspected of housing a secret underground facility used for Iran's nuclear program, a claim denied by Iranian authorities.

IAEA inspectors visited the site in 2005, but only one of four areas of potential interest within the grounds. At the time, the nuclear watchdog did not report any unusual activities but the Parchin site was prominently mentioned in the agency's report last year.

The report asserted that Iran constructed "a large explosives containment vessel" in which to conduct experiments on triggering a nuclear explosion, apparently 11 years ago, adding that it had satellite images "consistent with this information."

"Whatever the reasoning of the agency is, it proves the IAEA is not loyal to its previous commitments," the Iranian radio said. The tone of the commentary suggested the visit to the military complex would likely be denied.

The IAEA visit comes as Iran last week announced what it described as key advancements in its nuclear program, inserting the first domestically made fuel rod into a research reactor in Tehran and installing a new generation of Iranian-made centrifuges at the country's main uranium enrichment facility in the central town of Natanz.

Beyond concerns about the purported weapons work, Washington and its allies want Iran to halt uranium enrichment, which they believe could eventually lead to weapons-grade material and the production of nuclear weapons. Iran has been enriching uranium up to 20 per cent, while uranium enriched to more than 90 per cent can be used for a nuclear warhead.

The IAEA team wants to talk to key Iranian scientists suspected of working on an alleged weapons program. They also hope to break down opposition to their plans to inspect documents related to nuclear work and secure commitments from Iranian authorities to allow future visits.

The IAEA summarized its information last November in a 13-page document drawing on 1,000 pages of intelligence. It stated then for the first time that some of the alleged experiments can have no other purpose than developing nuclear weapons.

Iran has denied alleged weapons experiments for nearly four years, saying they are based on "fabricated documents" provided by a "few arrogant countries" — a phrase authorities in Iran often use to refer to the U.S. and its allies.

I actually read the IAEA report from last November. The claims that Iran is hiding something from the agency are pretty much baseless. Everything that the report says Iran is doing has civilian, non-weapon applications.

Iran has at least 2 working nuclear reactors, which they are determined to use for medical isotopes and to produce electricity. It is completely reasonable - and *legal* - for Iran to make its own fissionable materials and conduct experiments to move towards those goals.

All of the whining, hand-wringing, and sanctioning is aimed at generating public support for an invasion of Iran so that Western oil companies can regain control over the Iranian oil fields they lost in the 1979 Revolution.

Any time you want to know the truth about why something is happening, remember those 3 magic words, "Follow The Money."

With regard to Iran, the money leads to Iranian oil fields.

strange. that´s not what mohamed elbaradei says. in fact he says they cannot get the info they need. and he even speaks the language

Yahoo actually had an informative article about this today. I know, Wow. It sounds like the IAEA wants full access to Parchin, a traditional weapons facility. According to the article the IAEA has only been given partial access to it in the past. This is also were the chamber the IAEA sited as being used for nuclear detination experiments was housed some 11 years ago.

        Display Name~

What is the title of the article where El-Baradei says that he cannot get the information he needs?

The IAEA report from last November indicates that Iran has been totally transparent regarding everything they did under the table from back in the 1970's right up through 2003. The report states that every concern for the past 40 plus years has been satisfactorily addressed, and Iran is 100% in compliance with the requirements of the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

I think that the Iranians are sick to death of the IAEA coming back to Iran, over and over, asking the exact same questions, over and over, getting honest-and verifiable-answers from Iran, over and over, and then having the IAEA make yet *another* request to see the same facilities yet again because the IAEA is being bullied into playing "Columbo" with them.

Iran is tired of being pestered about matters that it has repeatedly given satisfactory answers to.

If I am wrong about this, it is only because the IAEA must have some credible classified information. However, the past behavior of the US and EU with regard to allegations of WMD makes me think that this Iranian bomb scare is just another attempt to justify yet another war for Petro-Imperialism.

It really doesn't matter if Iran opens all doors to the IAEA and are found to have no ambitions toward a weapon. The US has already stated that they want Iran to stop enriching Uranium altogether and Iran will never go for this making inspections a moot point.

there's not much point in the IAEA visiting any sites if their findings are ignored like in Iraq...NO WAR WITH IRAN

it will turn out just fine! the iranians will open the facilities, give up their ambitions to develop nukes. everyone will be happy.
i also believe pigs can fly and santa lives at the north pole.

Wouldn't it be cool if the jews bombed Iran while those UN #$%$ were there and they (jews) killed a bunch of Frenchies, Brits, and some pot-smokin-hippy type Americans? I'm voting for Santorum because he will put women in their place.

        #$%$ off
      • WWMD 3 mths ago
Rick Santorum has already lost the Republican nomination. His platform is so shallow that he ran out of talking points over a month ago. He is embarrassing himself by making oxymoronic statements about Obama's profession to be a Christian. Santorum is a Catholic who talks like a Protestant fundamentalist. That behavior, by itself, should set off alarm bells in the heads of all Republicans.

If you vote for Santorum, it will only be during the Texas Republican Primary. Santorum will *not* be running against Obama this fall.

If we can just hold off until we get Obama out before we attack, that would be best! let me put this out there! if we attack now and its a full blown global war. He will try and put the elections off to stay in power. Lets do like we did when Jimmy was cow towing to Iran, as soon as Reagn hit office they had the hostages on the plane cause they knew he was about to make glass out of them! they couold not give them back quick enough
      • WWMD 3 mths ago
I was at Fort Bragg when "Jimmy" sent the Delta Force to Iran to rescue the hostages. They failed because one of their helicopters crashed into a C-130. Both aircraft exploded. They aborted because the explosion was visible in Tehran and there was no longer enough cargo capacity to evacuate the hostages.

Reagan got the hostages back by offering Iran intelligence for their war against Iraq. No guts there.

The other thing you might want to remember about "Jimmy" was that he was one of the original Navy officers to learn how to build, run, and maintain nuclear reactors. He was a major asset to Admiral Rickover. When a nuclear reactor in Canada had a partial meltdown in 1952, the Navy sent "Jimmy" up there to personally go in and shut it down. When "Jimmy" was President, he used his personal expertise to deal with 3-Mile Island and the question of developing neutron bombs.

Jimmy Carter is the only President who has personally worked as a nuclear reactor operator and who has personally worked on a reactor meltdown. Consequently, whatever Carter says about nuclear power and nuclear weapons is, in my opinion, totally correct.

You may have noticed that Carter has not said one single thing about Iran being a nuclear threat.

If he's not worried, neither am I.

        Get your facts straight.

I see wwmd has drank the kool-aid! Jimmy is a radiacl liberal as far as I am concerned! I am glad he is your hero! & he may have been a good nuclear tech. But for a president, he was mediocre AT BEST! obama policy mirrors his.

There's a hole in the ground in Tehran. The inspectors are looking into it.
