    GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. weather agency says La Nina conditions re-emerged in August and will likely continue through the rest of 2011 and into early next year.

    The La Nina phenomenon is characterized by cooler sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, greater rainfall in the southern Pacific, and dry conditions in parts of east Africa, southwest Asia and the southern United States.

    The World Meteorological Organization says La Nina conditions could strengthen to "moderate intensity" but probably will be considerably weaker than the most recent ones linked to flooding and drought in parts of the world.

    La Ninas — the opposite of El Ninos — normally trigger some extremes, such as flooding in Australia and drought in Texas.

        until the temp anomaly for section 3.4 remains below -0.5 for three consecutive months its not considered to be a la nina. In oct it rose to - 0.5 so they needed to wait until it moved. It dropped and is now an oficial la nina

        Like winter/summer La Nina/El Nino are very short cycles embedded among many other cycles that determine the CURRENT climate. But there are other non-cyclic factors that also can have major impact on where the equilibrium point will be. Things include the configuration of the land masses, such as many smaller continents or one large continent, or major mountain ranges that change wind patterns and the rate of chemical exchange do to erosion.

        so to answer your question, both are true in certain ways.

      La nina is caused by COLD water at oceans bottom current to rise to top and thereby cool TRADE WINDS which stur the atomsphere

      So, was this "predicted" or is it a surprise? Weather is so complex that we can't predict accurately out even a day in many cases because we simply do not understand it well enough and cannot measure all of the factors that effect it. Climate is even more complex then weather but we have people insisting that they can tell us what the climate will be like 100 years from now.

      Ever since El Nino first got publicity a number of years back, it seems that we are perpetually in a condition of either El Nino or La Nina. I have a different name for it.

      Current statements from the IPCC are that extreme weather is not a result of climate change. That is expected to change shortly to accomadate the wishes of the politicans.

      If you listened to most media reports about global warming, you would think the Earth temperature was NEVER supposed to change (you would have thoguht the Earth's temp had stayed the same for the last 4.5 billion years and all of a sudden out of nowhere, it just increased dramatically)

        (just increased dramatically) That is whats happening. It should take hundreads if not thousands of years to warm this fast not 25! You see thats what the people who know about climate are afraid of. But by god what do they know its still snowing until it stops that and the midwest looks like a dessert I'm not going to believe any of it!!! Just go burn some more oil and by some oil based product!
