Underground church pastor sent to China labor camp

BEIJING (AP) — An underground Protestant leader has been sentenced to two years in a labor camp as China cracks down on unapproved churches that are getting bolder in confronting government religious policy, a U.S.-based monitoring group said Tuesday.

The expansion and growing influence of unofficial churches has unsettled China's rulers, always suspicious of any independent social group that could challenge Communist authority.

China Aid Association said Pastor Shi Enhao, 55, was sentenced over the weekend for organizing illegal religious gatherings. He had been detained June 21 in the eastern city of Suqian in Jiangsu province.

Labor camp sentences are handed out without trial on the recommendation of police and can be extended beyond the usual two-year term.

Shi's church was also ordered to cease meeting and its car, cash donations, musical instruments and even choir robes were seized by police, said China Aid, based in Midland, Texas.

China's officially atheistic ruling Communist Party claims to protect freedom of worship and authorities usually refuse to comment on prosecutions against religious figures.

A man who answered the phone at the Suqian police spokesman's office said he had no knowledge of the case. The man gave only his surname, Tian, because he was not authorized to speak with media.

Another man who answered the phone at the Suqian local government's Religious Affairs Bureau said he knew of no such case. The man refused to give his name as is common among Chinese bureaucrats.

Shi is a deputy chairman of the Chinese House Church Alliance, a national group of underground congregations established to provide mutual support and intercede with authorities who routinely threaten and harass unofficial churches.

China Aid said Shi's son, Shi Yongyang, was forced to sign a document confirming his father's sentencing, but was not provided with the required copy in an apparent attempt to downplay news of the sentence.

In detaining him on June 21, police cited the charge of "suspicion of using superstition to undermine national law enforcement," according to a charging document scanned and posted to China Aid's website. That was apparently replaced with the lesser charge of organizing illegal gatherings to avoid a trial.

In an example of the growing boldness of religious organizations in China, underground Protestant church leaders issued a petition to the National People's Congress, China's rubber-stamp legislature, in May that called for an end to persecution of a Beijing church. The Shouwang Church and its 1,000 members have been blocked from their worship place for weeks and members detained at home to prevent them protesting.

The crackdown on underground Protestant churches comes amid faltering relations with the Vatican over Beijing's refusal to recognize the Holy See's exclusive right to name bishops.

On Monday, China called the Vatican "extremely unreasonable and rude" for expressing anger at three recent ordinations done without the pope's approval.

One of the only things that sucks worse than the Catholic church is China. While the churches beliefs are bogus, no one should be jailed for those beliefs unless of course they molested a child

If they believe that they have the right to preach why go underground? Unless, of course, there are ulterior motives behind the facades of the church. History is full of church intrigues from the days of the Black Ships going to Japan and the Conquistadors in South America. 2 years might just not be enough to .put these people in their place.

Or they do not want to be sent to labor camps and beaten to a pulp by minions of a government that cannot handle dissent. That is one other option, louie.
      • Todd 10 mths ago
        Prehaps they're preaching sedition.
      • Jim 10 mths ago
Perhaps they're preaching the freedom of mankind.

Instead of doing it underground why not present it to the Gov. and work on getting it approved. They can only say no. It makes it look like your hiding something and spreading hate and discontent.
      • Gentle Jack Jones 10 mths ago
Because then they get arrested and tortured up front because the perverse CCP cannot handle any thought other than that which they pronounce is what China believes. No spreading of hate or discontent. Just allowing people to have other ideas than the CCP wants them to believe, Mike. Nothing a real government should be afraid of.

The US Christians use torture in their wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We Chinese do not do that. I strongly urge you to immediately stop pushing your Christian way of life onto China. You are having a culture shock.

We are not pushing anything. We have just introduced God to china and the chinese people have decided to follow him.

Jim posted: "And in America, we have welcomed millions of former Chinese citizens who have come seeking the same freedoms. So your claims of sinophobia are bogus."

Answer: I want to ask one simple question: Is it not self-evident that more Europeans have migrated to North America? China with her population greater than Europe only account for 1% population in the USA while Europeans count for 80%. One would wonder why is that! The current US Visa Bulletin gives whites close to 100 times more opportunity to become American than it gives the Chinese. Europeans can come to the US legally and freely, while Chinese subject to severe restriction. This inequality gives favors to White Europeans over Chinese. What a shocking racist reality of the 21st century. The man-made inequality is deeply rooted in Christian Sinophobia and the profoundly racist culture of the European Americans. It is a reality that every Chinese living in North America experience on a daily basis.

Yes, this Sinophobia is not targeted at the Chinese government. This racist resentment is squarely aimed at Ethnic Chinese people.

Well there Mr. Shieffer what kind of treatment do you think whites get when they are in the PRC? You should learn more about Chinese attitudes towards outsiders before you blindly criticize Christians and the West.
      • Carl Shieffer 10 mths ago
Rupercht, I am not blindly criticize Christians and the West. Everything I say is rooted in observable facts - such as the US Visa Bulletin in this case. You make a typical mistake: "judging others based on your one mentality or culture". You have no Chinese language skill, you have zero understanding of Chinese culture.

Earlier this year, I went to a church story telling session. One story is a Chinese Evangelical Pastor converted to lord "Jesus" was imprisoned by Chinese commy. I went to check the Chinese record: the person had sex with 3 women. One husband found out and brought a knife to the farm house. Then the so-called Christian pastor killed the husband. The Christian news omitted all the detail but posed a story that Christians are persecuted in China. The reason for such stories is because Western news reporters are profound Christians and profoundly Sinophobia. They try to seek and manufacture stories fit their religious doctrine. Facts do not matter to them because they use faith - blind faith and they reject facts.

It's likely "Carl Shieffer" has multiple accounts and logs into Yahoo multiple times to crush anything against the CCP

Hateful Christian lies like this news only damage the interests of Christianity in China. We Chinese witness the bias, hysteria, brainwashing and hatred of Christians. I am sorry your faith gives you such profound racism and Sinophobia.
      • Jim 10 mths ago
No racism or Sinophobia my friend. We are supporting the Chinese people who dare to think for themselves. At most, you can only claim anti-Communism here.
      • Carl Shieffer 10 mths ago
Jim, we Chinese people do not believe your God. I hope you dare to think for yourself and escape your Christian iron-cage and be free.

China does not abuse Protestant Christians. Asking all churches to register is a reasonable law. Christians must learn to respect other cultures and authorities. You can claim your "God" is above all. But you are crossing a boundary. Imagine your neighbor demand all your house and land to be below his son - his claimed God. Obviously you would see him as unreasonable. This is exactly what Christianity is doing in China. We Chinese do not believe in your God. Your God is a myth created in your own culture. You have no right to impose your culture onto others. It is funny to see Westerners worship their childhood indoctrination all their lives and passionately push such nonsense onto others.

Carl Shieffer is an ignorant CCP flunky. I have any co-workers in China who are Christian. The numbers are growing because the CCP has nothing to offer people. Many Chinese are seeking something more than making money (and poisoning children with bad milk). Buddhism and Christianity will fill the vacuum the communist’s empty doctrine has left.

Seems the Catholics want to start a new Opium trade in China.
They did very well last time.
    • Carl Shieffer  •  10 mths ago
This is a great example of the Catholic misinformation and Sinophobia. The involved person is not a Catholic bishop. He was involved in gang crimes and theft. The locals are all ignorant farmers who are profoundly multi-theist. Using lies and resulting hatred, the Catholic church is doomed to fail in China. In fact, it has failed fro 2000 years in China.

I'm a local Chinese. None of my family and friends is Christian. I do have foreign colleagues who are Christian. They said that they seldom go to church. I support my government.
    • Ageofreason  •  10 mths ago
The Catholic Church were the scum who introduced the Opium trade to China.
China would be stark raving bonkers to allow them to start a new round of evil.

Catholic and Orthodox Christians in China do not seem to have these kinds of problems with the government of China. Maybe they're more respectful of the government there. If the government requests you go through them to register your church, you should respect the government and get your church registered if you can. To much resistance to the government by some of these Protestant churches could bring repercussions against the Catholic and Orthodox Christian Churches in China, who seem to be respecting government requests to get registered. Don't ruin things for all the other Christains in China by being a hard as-ed rebel. RESPECT THE GOVERNMENT and they will respect you back.

China is well advised to keep the sickness of religion infecting their country.
All it brings is hate and suffering.

The Catholic Church is nothing more than a child molesting criminal cult.
    • ERIC  •  10 mths ago
People shouldn't be allowed to preach lies from an old book, but a labour camp is too harsh a punishment for that crime.
