Union Strikes May Halt Twinkie Production

Twinkie lovers may want to stock up on their golden Hostess treats. This time it is not the food police who are threatening the yummy cakes. ABC News says teamsters are making strike threats to Hostess, which is in an operational bankruptcy at the moment. If there is a union strike, production of Twinkies will cease.

Hostess, in Irving Texas, is the maker of Twinkies, Wonder Bread and Ho-Hos. The company blames high labor costs for its current financial problems. The company has asked a bankruptcy court judge to help it "trim" the fat on operational costs. Hostess owes $800 million and is trying to find operational adjustments to help it stay in business. In other words, Hostess wants the judge to allow it to break the current contract.

A USA Today article reports that nearly three-quarters of the 19,000 Hostess employees are part of the Teamsters union or a baker's union. They have voted several times and 90 percent of the members want to strike. What will keep the union from walking out? They do not like the proposed five-year wage freeze. They also are upset about changes to the existing pensions. Last, but not least, the company wanted members to pay more towards their health care. If the company does not change its stand on these three issues, the union says it will walk.

The question of whether or not a strike will save or kill Hostess employees' jobs is unanswered. In an economy that is shaky at best, it is hard to play catch-up. Businesses in financial trouble have a hard time finding the black line when workers strike. Employees, whose families depend on a paycheck, are also facing terrible consequences.

Even if the union wins by striking, the employees face the real probability of falling behind on bills. In the current economy, most households are finding it tough to save money. Faced with a strike situation, and less money coming in, many homeowners face tough financial choices.

Meanwhile, Twinkie lovers might want to find a back-up treat to satisfy their sweet tooth.

Ha, Let em strike. I say lock the doors, fire the idiot union workers & send em to the unemployment lines. Sell the company to someone that can hire new workers. Then Hostess can move forward making Twinkees, fruit pies, HoHos, bread, etc. without the union baggage.

Let the union #$%$ walk, and walk right out of any jobs. We can live without either Twinkies or the twinkette union leeches. Labor unions cause businesses to go broke, and this is another classic example. How about unions starting their own businesses? Impossible!

Toss the Teamster Twinkie makers out on their fat bums... the US can handle not having Twinkies and junk food.

it's ok, it's not like the ingredients are going to go bad during a strike. Take your time, knock yourself out.

You have to have something the public wants if you want to threaten a strike. I love Twinkies but I haven't had one in ten years. I don't think I'll be racing out to buy them when they cost $10 a box because the union won't compromise. All I have to say is the government better not do a bail out when the company goes under.

Let them strike but they better not get unemployment benies on the taxpayer. Hostess can fire them all and hire non-union folks who will gladly take those jobs. There are millions of folks who actually want and need jobs. Note to the Teamsters: Pensions are a thing of the past. People should pay into their own 401K these days with perhaps a company match. Also, health care costs have skyrocketed and employees have to shoulder part of that burden. You consume, you pay.

If the company is asking for these measures from its employees, the cost cutting measures should apply to upper management as well. If Hostess wants to show its employees it is serious about cutting costs, the wage freeze and reduction of benefits should start at the top.

Call the guys who used to work for Caterpillar in PA years ago, how a strike when the company was falling on bad times worked out. Walked the line for almost a year... before moving on to the Gov Cheese line. A five year freeze, pension cut & paying something towards health-care is better than NO JOB in everyone's mend... except a union mind. If they prefer no job... so be it.

The Hostess management really has fallen down on the job, all they had to do is give a couple million to President Obama's campaign and they would have been rewarded with gobs and gobs of taxpayer money.

You know what happens when a union strikes on a bankrupt company in a recession. The company folds from lack of financial support from the banks or the company just locks the doors breaks the union and moves to another state. At this time in this country some groups just need to shut up and smile that they have a job.
