Unwitting amputee blasts health ad's altered photo

NEW YORK (AP) — An overweight man who unwittingly became an amputee in advertisements that New York City is posting to warn against diabetes says he's worried the ads might hurt his acting career.

Twenty-seven-year-old Cleo Berry of Los Angeles says he was "beyond shocked" upon discovering that a photograph he posed for several years ago in Manhattan had turned up on the Internet — but showing him without one leg. The photo was digitally altered to make it look like Berry's right leg is missing. It appears on an ad warning that growing portion sizes can lead to diabetes and amputations.

Berry tells The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/zYOoWG ) that while he supports the city's efforts to educate people about the dangers of diabetes, he disagrees with the use of a manipulated image of an able-bodied person, instead of an image of a real victim.

City officials have defended the practice as common in advertising.

      • Memory 3 mths ago
On the search engine which first alerted you to the existence of the story. Funny how that works.

This is Yahoo, it does not support photos. After all this time you would think everyone would know that by now.

What the City of New York is defending in their ad is that the practice is common in advertising. In other words, and I firmly believe, all advertising is a lie!
      • open sesame 3 mths ago
Clearly, the city of New York is lying about something.
      • Mister C 3 mths ago

They photo shopped the rest of his body off the picture as well. Now you cant see him at all. LOL
    • YIKES!  •  3 mths ago
So... its common for ad agencys to LIE.

If you get diabetes, you might lose your leg. We dont have any REAL photos of people who actually HAVE lost their leg, so here is a photo shopped picture of a fat guy....

If amputations from Diabetes is really on the rise then why don't they just get someone who's had their leg amputated due to Diabetes?
      • oops 3 mths ago
That would make to much sense!
      • marshhawk 3 mths ago
Maybe because it is not pretty enough. My late grand father had an amputated arm due to an accident. Growing up it did not bother me to see it . I though all grand fathers had only one arm.( hey I was very young at the time) Grand father could hunt , drive , fish and farm. He worked for the USPS as a rural carrier. This was all before mainstreaming people with disabilities.

A good example of how truth in advertising works, just omit the truth.

Only an as***le would choose a screen name ‘Investigate Bush’, but look what this complete idiot wrote in a mocking reply to someone - “you just took the prise you ignorant noron.”

Of course there are no such words - ‘prise’ and ‘noron’, you insipid IGNORANT twerp...

It seems like if diabetes was such a large issue, it wouldn't be hard to find an actual amputee
    • jemsee j  •  3 mths ago
Is there not something called 'truth' in advertising?
I guess asking the gov weather it be state or fed to use the truth is asking to much.

"City officials have defended the practice (altering photos) as common in advertising." So that somehow makes it right for NYC to do the same. Bet I will not be able to use that argument when I get a traffic violation in NYC. Others speed so it is alright for me to speed. What a bunch of hypocritical clowns. Guess it is OK in NYC to defraud and fake out the public. I hope this guy sues their butt off.
    • hoppy  •  3 mths ago
Oh please if you care for yourself when diabetic you don't have to come become an amputee quite misleading folks! Geese! I am diabetic and no complications 12 years. Fear mongers!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Kathryn P  •  Germantown, Maryland  •  3 mths ago
What? The couldn't find a picture of a diabetic that actually is an amputee? If their point is to scare and/or warn people that this could happen to you, then I would think they could find someone is actually HAS happened to. Photoshopping a picture of someone who still has both his legs seems a little out there.
    • Amy  •  3 mths ago
"City officials have defended the practice as common in advertising."--equals, they are totally okay with lying to you. Side note: is it really that hard to find a diabetic amputee? I have 2 in my family.
