Urban Qurban App Encourages You to Donate a Goat on Eid Al-Adha

Here’s an interesting Android app created by three Indonesian development companies to make tomorrow’s Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha a more blissful day of giving and sharing. The app is called Urban Qurban. It was created by D!Yours Human Centered Design (HCD), Badr Interactive, and Twip Studio.

Qurban means sacrifice, referring to the act of sacrificing halal domestic animals such as cows or goats, and distributing the animal’s meat to one’s families, friends - and to the poor and needy - on Eid al-Adha day. This Urban Qurban app has three main functions:

  • Encourage people to purchase live animals which will be distributed as meat packages to less fortunate individuals and families by the 50 social community partners. The buyer could also decide by themselves where they want to donate the animals.

  • Urban Qurban has a gaming function where the user can raise a goat character and earn points up until tomorrow. These points will then be collected to buy discounted products from the 50 social enterprise partners.

  • On Eid al-Adha day, the app supports live streaming of the sacrifice slaughtering process. Each sacrifice will have a buyer ID on it, so users can also supervise the process. Viewer discretion - the visuals might not be suitable for some people.

Kompas cites Fahry Yanuar Rahman from D!Yours HCD as saying that they hope this app can help the traditional goat and cow farmers bring in some business from middle-class society. Each goat and cow product sold on the app and on the website are bought from farmers in rural villages.

Big Zaman, the project manager of Urban Qurban, said that the goat-pet game can only be played until tomorrow. Afterwards, they’re going to change the app content to other qurban related things, such as a qurban saving account helper for the following year. All of the qurban purchases and donations will also be updated on the Urban Qurban website.
