US: 29,000 Somali children under 5 dead in famine

The likelihood of famine increases when irresponsible breeding outpaces the food supply. It's unfortunate that 29,000 children under 5 had to suffer and die a painful death. How many more under the age of 18 suffered the same fate? The reason I bring this up is that sometimes our best intentions bring about increased suffering. We've been sustaining the population of Somalia and other African nations for many decades. I remember the "Feed The Children" infomercials on late night tv dating back to at least the 70's. Due to our supposed goodwill these past 40 years and our donation of food and medicine, they've had an unsustainable population explosion. And now that the donations can't keep up with this population explosion, many more are forced to suffer these cruel and painful deaths. As sad as it is, the truth is that had those 29,000 not died then 30 years from now those 29,000 would have produced 100,000 more offspring (based upon the avg birthrate of 7-8 children for each Somali woman) born into suffering and despair. So we shed our tears, but at the same time understand the simple logic that although 29,000 suffered a horrible death, this outcome is better than 100,000 additional Somali's suffering in the future. Or the 350,000 of their offspring suffering 30 yrs beyond that. By artificially sustaining these people over the yrs and allowing their population to get to where it is today, it is OUR fault that so many suffer. We should have let nature (and God) take its course. Doing so would have allowed our humanitarian efforts to keep up with their astronomical birthrates.

These people have over 8 kids per women. This is a natural, Malthusian occasion.

If you want to show compassion, send them condoms.

A humanitarian crisis is surely looming in Somalia. UN, African Union and SADCC should surely act. Internal issues of a country should be solved by the indigenous people of that country. About the famine in the Horn of Africa surely we should assist on humanitarian grounds. My special thanx to Save the Child,World Vision, American Red Cross, UNHCR and Oxfam America for their unwavering support despite the threat from Al-Quaida and El- Shabab extremists. We need to think positively...................

please think positive on this, its no joke, lets help this children, give them a chance to live. Those children didn't choose to be like this. God Jesus is watching over not just for those unfortunate people but also our actuation towards other...

Of course there is a reason why they let this happen. They have no oil.

This may sound bad, but I think that they should make the women and men get contraception in order to get food. It is obvious that the country can not support its current population so in order to get it down to a level that can be sustained it would need to have 0% or less population growth (as the old die off and no new children to replace).

Africa has enough money to help themselves,you just need to persuade rich tyrants like Robert Mugabe to share it out,or remove them from power and do it for them, easy.

I think they should give the children up for adoption!! They need the good homes and have the huge foods!

quit sending sacks of grains and calling it food. those kids need those big bags of generic cereal from costco, some mcoubles off the value menu (and condiments) and large cokes. this is what kids need. when you send grains they're just going to grind it up and make what they think is a delicious nutrious paste that kids get all over their faces. you wont see any mcnuggets smeared on their faces. and for those who are worried about contraception, slip some codoms in with the happy meals
