    US Airways traffic up 3.6 percent in December

    TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — US Airways Group Inc. said Thursday its traffic rose 3.6 percent in December as more people took to the skies during the holiday season.

    A jump in domestic traffic offset a decline in traffic for flights across the Atlantic and to Latin America. Traffic on U.S. flights rose 5.1 percent.

    As traffic expanded, so did the airline's capacity. The number of available seats rose 2.2 percent last month. Capacity was up 3.4 percent in the U.S.

    Flights were about 1.1 percent more full, bringing the airline's average occupancy rate in December to 81.9 percent.

    US Airways said it posted its best-ever December operational results, including its lowest rate of canceled or late flights and missing or damaged bags.

    In the last three months of the year, traffic was up 1.7 percent while the number of available seats stayed flat.

    For all of 2011, traffic rose 3.1 percent, mostly due to strong growth in flights to Europe.
