    US Airways traffic falls slightly in September

    TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — US Airways Group Inc. said Wednesday that its traffic fell slightly in September as more flights over the Atlantic were countered by a steep decline in Latin America.

    But despite a decline in traffic, US Airways made more money per passenger during the month across its network. Across its main routes and express flights, the Tempe, Ariz. carrier said passenger revenue per available seat mile rose 14 percent from a year earlier. That's mostly due to higher fares. Revenue per available seat mile is an important metric for airlines because it measures how much money the airline brings in for each mile a paying passenger flies.

    Excluding its US Airways Express flights, the airline said paying passengers flew 4.87 billion miles last month, down 0.9 percent from 4.91 billion miles in September of 2010. Latin American traffic fell 7.9 percent, while domestic traffic fell 1.6 percent. Traffic over the Atlantic rose 3.1 percent.

    Including US Airways Express flights, total traffic fell 3.8 percent.

    The airline's capacity, or number of available seats, fell 2.7 percent. As US Airways tried to capture demand between the U.S. and Europe, the number of seats on those flights expanded by 4.3 percent. The number of seats on U.S. flights fell by 4.6 percent. Airlines add or take away available seats by either redeploying aircraft or adjusting the size of a plane on a given route.

    As the airline worked to match seats with demand, it stuffed planes more full than a year earlier. The average occupancy rate, or number of seats filled, rose by 1.5 percent. On U.S. flights, the occupancy rate rose by 2.5 percentage points to 84.2 percent.
