US consul clarifies travel warning to Mexico

NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) — The State Department consul assigned to Nogales and Puerto Penasco, Mexico, says the recent travel warning issued by the federal government is not meant to discourage Americans from visiting Mexico.

Chad Cummins said that while some areas of Sonora should be avoided, the State Department is merely advising U.S. citizens to "exercise caution" while visiting the border city of Nogales and the beach resort of Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point.

Exercising caution is the same thing someone does when crossing the street or when going out at night in a big city, Cummins told the Nogales International (http://bit.ly/wyX4rS ).

The federal government is not telling people to stay out of Mexico, Cummins said. "That is not the purpose of this travel alert," he said.

Instead, the warning is meant to share the travel rules for consular personnel in Mexico with the general public, and offer a look at conditions on the ground as seen by State Department representatives there, Cummins said.

The travel warning was issued Feb. 8 and expands previous State Department warnings for Mexico to include advisories for all 31 states and the federal district of Mexico City.

The section on Sonora notes that Nogales and Puerto Penasco are the state's major travel destinations in Sonora. It advises Americans to "exercise caution when visiting the coastal town of Puerto Penasco" and recommends that travelers access the beach town from the border crossing at Lukeville, Ariz.

The new State Department warning tells travelers that "Sonora is a key region in the international drug and human trafficking trades and can be extremely dangerous for travelers."

You all deserve a fine for being stupid. The border towns are unsafe because the Cartels are trying very hard to get their drugs to Americans that pay way too much for them. Now seriously, where does the fault start at? Please try re-thinking your ideas and start dropping a dime on every user and dealer you know and this will all stop. Oh? You are not a snitch? Then shut up !

It is incredibly unethical and upsetting that Mexico authorities are trying to make their situation seem like nothing out of the ordinary. I myself have been a crime victim in Mexico and for them to say that nothing is happening or will happen to U.S. Citizens going down there to visit is a COMPLETE LIE. STAY AWAY FROM MEXICO!!!!!

It's the old story. How can you tell when a Mexican is lying......

Anyone notice that Americans are becoming less and less welcomed in more and more countries?
      • M C 3 mths ago
That is incorrect. If you show up with dollars, you are always welcome anywhere.
      • Larry 3 mths ago
        Wonder why ?
MC from Phoenix .... No not really - nobody cares about your dollars much anymore .... but if you think it matters - the you go right ahead and keep thinking that... won't you be surprised ....

The only appropriate travel warning to Mexico is: be afraid, be very afraid.

so dangerous that Bill and Hillary Clinton are meeting with President Calderon in Cabo San Lucas TODAY!!!!! Cabo is hosting the G-20 this summer , also because of security here. I only have seen Baja (Tijuana) on warnings.I bekieve the article is mistaken,Baja Sur (Cabo San Lucas, La Paz , Loreto) is not and should not be on any warnings.

There is no doubt that some of the border areas are unsafe, however our resort ares are safe. If you come to the resorts stay in the resort areas, there is no reason
to be bumming around the poor and unsafe places. We have wonderful resorts but the drug problems mainly along the border is scarring many people away for no reason.

MEXICO GOVERNMENT SOUGHT TO WITHHOLD DRUG WAR DEATH STATISTICS

MEXICO UNDER SIEGE: Official records show both the administration and the attorney general's office late last year refused formal requests for updated statistics. Under pressure, partial figures for 2011 have been released.

January 11, 2012 By Tracy Wilkinson, Los Angeles TimesReporting from Mexico City — Six months before a presidential election that his party is widely expected to lose, President Felipe Calderon is on the defensive about the government's blood-soaked drug war, with new revelations that it sought to conceal death toll statistics from the public.

By unofficial count, at least 50,000 people are believed to have been killed since Calderon deployed the military in the first days of his presidency in December 2006.
