    US Drug Watchdog Expands its Metal on Metal Defective Hip Implant Victims Initiative from DePuy's ASR Hip Implants to Include All Metal on Metal Hip Implants

    The US Drug Watchdog is expanding its defective hip implant victims initiative to include not just the recalled DePuy ASR hip implant, but all US citizens, who have what is called a metal-on-metal hip implant, that is now failing. According to the New York Times on December 27th 2011, "The so-called metal-on-metal hips in which a device’s ball and joint are made of metal, are failing at high rates within a few years instead of lasting 15 years or more, as artificial joints normally do. The wear of metal parts against each other is generating debris that is damaging tissue and, in some cases, crippling patients." According to the US FDA, symptoms of a recalled ASR DePuy hip implant failure include pain in the hip region, problems walking, swelling of the hip, or lack of flexibility in the area of the hips. The US Drug Watchdog says,"We want to hear from any US Citizen, who has received a metal on metal hip implant since 2005, if the hip implant recipient is experiencing pain in the region of the metal, on metal hip implant, problems walking, swelling in the hip region, and or lack of flexibility. We do not care if it was a ASR DePuy hip implant, or any other type of metal-on-metal hip implant, we want to get you identified, and want to work on making certain you are compensated for having a defective metal-on-metal hip implant."     The US Drug Watchdog is the premier advocate for victims of defective medical devices, and or recalled drugs, and the group is announcing today that it is dramatically expanding its initiative focused on defective DePuy ASR hip implants, as well as all so called metal-on-metal hip implants, and the various makers of these metal-on-metal hip implant devices. There are over 30,000 US citizens, who received a ASR DePuy hip implant, and the ASR DePuy hip implants are failing, or have failed at an unacceptably high rate. As a result there was a recall on this hip implant device in August of 2010 by the US FDA. The total number of US citizens now stuck with a metal-on-metal hip implant could easily be in the 100,000's. The US Drug Watchdog is now convinced the metal on metal hip implant problem is not just limited to the DePuy ASR, so they are aggressively moving forward with an initiative aimed at identifying all US hip implant recipients, who have a metal-on-metal device that has either failed, or is giving the recipient problems.
