Washington (AFP) - The United States and its European allies on Monday strongly condemned the "escalation of fighting and violence" in Libya, calling for a democratic transition in the near-lawless country crippled by Islamist militias.

A joint statement signed by Washington, Paris, Berlin, Rome and London also stressed that "outside interference in Libya exacerbates current divisions and undermines Libya's democratic transition," as US officials confirmed that the United Arab Emirates had bombed Islamists to regain control of Tripoli airport.
