US obesity epidemic shows no hint of shrinking

CHICAGO (AP) — America's obesity epidemic is proving to be as stubborn as those maddening love handles, and shows no sign of reversing course. More than one-third of adults and almost 17 percent of children were obese in 2009-2010, echoing results since 2003, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday.

"It's good that we didn't see increases. On the other hand, we didn't see any decreases in any group," said CDC researcher Cynthia Ogden.

Early in the decade, slight increases were seen among white, black and Hispanic men, and among Hispanic and black women. These changes may be leveling off, but the authors said they "found no indication that the prevalence of obesity is declining in any group."

In 2009-2010, more than 78 million adults and almost 13 million children aged 2-19 were obese, the CDC researchers reported.

Those numbers are staggering, and while they haven't increased in recent years, "we're plateauing at an unacceptably high prevalence rate," said Dr. David Ludwig, director of an obesity prevention center at Children's Hospital Boston. He was not involved in the reports.

The CDC reports summarize results of national health surveys in children and adults, which are conducted every two years. The nationally representative surveys include in-person weight and height measurements. The 2009-2010 reports involved nearly 6,000 adults and about 4,000 children, from infancy through age 19.

The results were released online in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Elbert Huang, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Chicago who studies health care policy issues, said his research shows that even if obesity rates continue to remain stable, there will be dramatic increases down the road in diabetes and in costs linked with that disease. That's because Type 2 diabetes, among many diseases linked with obesity, becomes more prevalent as people age.

The latest reports — one on children and the other on adults — focused on obesity, meaning a body-mass index of at least 30. But the numbers of adults and children who were overweight, with a BMI of between 25 and 29, also remained high.

Overall, 33 percent of adults were overweight but not obese, versus about 15 percent of children and teens.

Rates of overweight or obese adults and children were generally higher in blacks and Hispanics than in whites.

The government says a healthy weight is a BMI of between 18 and 25. The index is a ratio of height to weight.

When I pick up my kids from school I'm amazed at how many fat kids there are nowadays. I think back to when in I was growing up the 80's and there was just a handful of fat kids (usually the ones who got teased). My kids are involved in sports and I limit their junk food. Parents need to stop making excuses and take responsibility for their kids' health.

America is fat because of the standard American diet (SAD) of super processed, super refined foods high in sugar with little to no nutritional value and highly addictive. No wonder people overeat, their body is seeking nutrients. Want an easy way to lose weight, eat whole (not instant) oatmeal for breakfast instead of sugary cereal and some greens, like a salad before or with every meal.

I think it has alot to do with automobiles. People drive everywhere nowadays. Kids used to walk to the bus stop every day, now they are driven by car. Then they are driven to McDonalds after school, then they sit in front of computers, televisions, or play video games, followed by dinner. It is no wonder. Adults drive to fast food all the time themselves.

Let me see, on one hand we replaced manual labor jobs with ones which have you seated at a computer, then we started pumping growth hormones into all the meat that gets consumed. Sounds like we got exactly the results our actions should have led to.

Lets talk about the fast food stores on the streets....
How about AM PM gas station, Seven Eleven, and the rest of these little stores, they attract ignorant people by advertising on their window, 2 Hot dogs for $1 or 2 burgers for $1,99. How many people will say these meals are more poison than healthy? Not many, only us who are writing these comments know that these are poison meals.
Think about it people what kind of quality Hot Dog you are buying for $1?
What kind of meat you are buying for $1...

Every one who write comments know that healthy food with physical activities is the only key to be fit no one can argue that, but where the argument starts is here...
When people are watching with their kids high rated sport events such as NFL playoffs how many ads of Subway sandwiches, Mc Donald's, Carl's Junior, Pepsi, Coca Cola, 5 energy drinks, Pizza Hut, Dominos pizza, Papa Jones, Heart burn pills, Lapitor, Cialis, and hundreds more....
Do you think these millions of viewers who are watching these ads are saying these meals are un healthy for you? Of course not because the prices advertised to purchase these meals are super cheap, so people going for quantity rather quality.
This is one of the biggest reasons that America will be more and more obese every day.

I'm not denying that there's a lot of overweight people, but consider that the government's BMI chart is a little screwed up. For example, at 6'1" and 197 pounds, the BMI chart says that I'm overweight. It says that normal weight for me is 140 - 189 pounds. I'd barely be skin and bones at 140 pounds.

Parents have been slacking off. They feed their children crud, give them video games, tell the kids to stay inside when it's too cold (when it isn't even 60 degrees), etc.
