    US OKs $196.5M for high-speed Chicago-Detroit rail

DETROIT (AP) — A high-speed passenger train service between Chicago and Detroit took two big steps forward Wednesday with a $196.5 million federal grant to Michigan and the state's acquisition of a 135-mile stretch of track.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that it has awarded Michigan the funds for signal and track improvements on the rail line between Kalamazoo in western Michigan and Dearborn in suburban Detroit.

Also Wednesday, the state said that it has agreed to buy the tracks between the two cities from Norfolk Southern Railway for $140 million.

The purchase money comes from the U.S. Transportation Department's Federal Railroad Administration, also the funding source for the track improvements.

Officials said the improvements would allow trains to reach 110 mph on the segment. It will shave 30 minutes off travel on Amtrak's Wolverine and Blue Water services between Detroit and Chicago, the U.S. government said.

The line runs through Illinois, Indiana and Michigan and served about 480,000 passengers in the most recent federal fiscal year.

"Investing in rail service will spark economic development in communities along a corridor linking Detroit and Chicago, two vital Midwest cities," Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement. "A faster, reliable passenger rail system is a priority for younger generations and vital to Michigan's ability to compete globally as businesses look to locate or expand."

Snyder said the rail improvements will also speed freight transportation, a priority for Ford Motor Co. and other businesses along the rail corridor.

"This is an important investment that will reduce travel time, improve reliability and on-time performance, and attract more passengers," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "We are creating jobs in Michigan, building our rails with American-made materials and growing the regional economy."

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan, said the effort will give residents additional transportation options.

"With gas prices as high as they are it is critically important that travelers have more choices in addition to driving," Stabenow said.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, its acquisition of the rail line, combined with Amtrak's ownership of the segment from Porter, Ind., to Kalamazoo, puts about 80 percent of the Detroit-Chicago track under "passenger-friendly ownership."

Amtrak's passenger service has suffered at various times around the country because the freight carriers that own the tracks often give priority to their own freight trains.

The state agency said it will build a double track on the busiest freight segment of the line east of Ypsilanti "to ensure adequate capacity for both freight and passenger operations."

Stop the insanity! The problem with all these pie-in-the-sky projects is that they will run over budget, sooner orlater. The Fed will provide only a fixed amount of funding and THEN, the remainder is borne by TAXPAYERS. YOU and ME BUDDY! And when the ridership drops (because who want to pay more to go to Detroit or St. Louis), guess who will pay the diff . TAXPAYERS, YOU and ME. When Durbin and others talk about all the great new jobs for about 12 months, or 24 months, that's very temporary. After that, the real bills come due and us taxpayers pay them. Wake up, write your spend-crazy congressmen..... FINALLY, do you want to risk your life on a high-speed train? Seems to me there is enough danger on the regular Amtrak trains as they reach 60 or 70 mph. Over 100 mph makes me gasp.

Do we really need to shave 30 minutes of rail travel time for $196.5 million tax payer dollars when we have a $14 trillion deficit?

        Only $6,550,000 per minute...WHAT A DEAL!

Perhaps this sounds like a good idea to the East Coast liberals who never get closer to Chicago and Detroit than flying over them, but there is no demand for train service between these two cities. Even if there were any practical reason to do this, Washington cannot seem to get it through its thick skull that we are BROKE! Stop spending money we do not have!

Another government boondoggle to satisfy the unions. In Illinois, the "high speed train" makes will make 5 to 7 stops before it gets to Springfield (say politicians) and there are stretches where the curves will prohibit high speed. It will cut about 15 minutes off of the trip. Let's see if the train system can make it without tax support. This is the playground for the "do gooders" who have no issue spending other peoples money.

I cannot believe our gov. officials would even consider that move. Greed is the only explanation.
    • Neil K  •  7 mths ago
Yeah man , that sure seems like a steep price to save just 30 minutes? I mean really. Wow. Someone suggested to instead plunk that money down on the deficit. Great idea. If a private company thought there was money to be made making this 'high-speed' link they would do it. The fact that no one is should tell you enough about the feasability of this project. This is an example of government waste. Pay it on the deficit so you don't keep raising our taxes etc., . Think about it. That's 200mil that could help keep social security solvent. Or reduce the gap between tax revenues and expenditures. (deficit)

110 mph is a "high speed" rail? Guess they've never been to France, Japan, South Korea, ect...
    • brian  •  7 mths ago
Im all for high speed rail..but make it high speed!! China can go 200mph making detroit two hours away would help detroit and chicago..but saving 30 min waste of money. High speed rail is the future teabaggers every other western country uses it..its time for us to start building.
    • abc  •  7 mths ago
don't mean to sound like a joker, but chicago and detroit are two most depressed city in the country with high crime and average economic value...why spend that kind of money here

What are we going to do, take the Train to Detroit to volunteer in a Food Bank ?
    • Jeffrey  •  7 mths ago
Better save some of that $196M for the ambulance chasing lawyers. The first time that brand new shiny 130 mph train runs over somebody in the land of entitlements the lawyers will be licking their chops.
