US renews warning to Egypt over aid

MUNICH (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday issued a new warning to Egypt that the failure to resolve a bitter dispute over the status of non-governmental pro-democracy groups may lead to the loss of American aid to the country.

Clinton met Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Amr at an international security conference in Munich and repeated that message, which had already been transmitted to officials in Cairo. The U.S. is due to give Egypt $1.3 billion in military assistance and $250 million in economic aid in 2012.

"We are very clear that there are problems that arise from this situation that can impact all the rest of our relationship with Egypt," Clinton told reporters. "We do not want that. We have worked very hard this past year to put in place financial assistance and other support for the economic and political reforms that are occurring in Egypt."

"We will have to closely review these matters as it comes for us to certify whether any of these funds from our government can be made available under these circumstances," she said.

Under U.S. law, Clinton must certify to Congress that Egypt is meeting certain requirements, including enacting democratic and rule of law reforms, in order for the assistance to be released.

U.S.-Egyptian tensions have been high since raids on the organizations, including some funded by the American government, began late last year. They rose further after Egypt refused to allow some American workers to leave the country. Three of those workers are now holed up in the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, fearing for their safety.

Egypt's investigation into foreign-funded organizations burst into in January when heavily armed security forces raided 17 offices belonging to 10 pro-democracy and human rights groups. U.S. and U.N. officials blasted the raids, which Egyptian officials defended as part of a legitimate investigation into the groups' work and finances.

In late January, Egypt barred at least six Americans and four Europeans who worked for U.S.-based organizations from leaving the country. They included Sam LaHood, the head of the Egypt office of the Washington-based International Republican Institute and the son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the only Republican in President Barack Obama's Cabinet.

I saw a couple years ago where our country has been sending taxpayer funds in the form of "third world" assistance (millions of dollars) to Communist China who we're massively in debt to. I bet it's still happening. It's a real circus up there in the US Congress. It's sad really.

Why are we giving them or any other foreign government aid in the first place? It is not our responsibility to solve all the world's problems. Let Russia and China aid the world for a while. We've done our share and more.

We need to stop ALL foreign aid! We can't support them until we can support ourselves. Spend that money on our country creating jobs and bringing back industry. No more helping any one they all complaign later and hate us anyway. So quit wasting our money on them.

Take the 1.3 billion and the 250 million and spend it here in the US then give Egypt the finger. They are not our friend any more but they do like us for the free money, weapons and food for their army

They have worked very hard to steal the American tax payers money to pay for influence in Egypt and all over the globe. If we all just stopped paying income tax these dirt bag politicians would be reduced to actually consulting with the American people about what they can and cannot do.

thumbs up--if we can't have a say in how our money is being spent then we shouldnt pay..now let's see what the thumbs down people say

So let's get this straight....your alcoholic sister-in-law has a kid that doesn't get an allowance, so you are doing ok and you give him a weekly allowance. Then he spits in your face, and you keep giving him the allowance. Then he burns down the house and runs away... and you find a P.O. box to send him an allowance. Then he takes your children hostage...and you begin to threaten his allowance...GIVE ME #$%$ BREAK US GOVERNMENT, CUT THEM OFF!

WHERE in the hades is our economic aid? I have nothing against Egypt..actually worked there off and on with my last job over the past several years and hate the see the Christians persecuted there now but I am against sending aid to countries right now as if we are the richest on the block. I don't know how we are not on the posters for donations in other countries..if we keep this up denying our own. Our people will be on the heart felt donation posters in India where all the jobs went and we can only hope they will send us something. Our kids need money, our schools, our homeless, our poor, our buisness owners, our scholarship programs for Americans and not Indians, our research, our roads, houses, and shelters...PLEASE what can we do! I am prepared to vote but which one of them will stop the non-sense...get every single one of them out in Washington that support all of this and outsourcing..all new people--guys I am not the political advocate type but it doesn't take the political type to see we are in big trouble for the long run here all of us, rich and poor. Unless the rich move to countries where the citizens are able to buy their things these greedy coporations are going to end up doing themselves in. The rest of us are just going to struggle to make it.

None are likely to stop it. Paul's probably the only one who wouldn't be sending these political organizers with piles of bribe money into a struggling country. Look at IRI's mission, to create political parties? Just what they need, more partisans than they already have.

Good. What they do there is none of our business and, we can't afford it. No matter what, in the end, they will hate us anyway. For some reason our government can't seem to realize that.

how bout stoping all the aid to these countries abroad and fix america....stop taking away from americans to give it to those that do not like us in the first place

The best foreign aid we ever gave was the marshal plan after WWII. Because it had strings. We would pay half of the cost as long as they bought only American goods or American companies did the the work! Worked wonders for the 50's and part of the 60's

US to Egypt: let our nationals break your laws whenever they want or we wont keep on bribing your military.
    • Jaguar4  •  3 mths ago
This is what happens when you get aid from other countries. It comes with a package and that is to comply to their terms. Egypt should become self sufficient and not depend on US aid even if it means having to make some sacrifices.

As Ollie might say, "Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten us into." How's that Arab Spring working out? Ron Paul's foreign policy is starting to make sense. Just leave other countries to work out their own problems as long as it doesn't impact us. China and Russia may have to right solution: Let them sort it out like they have been doing for centuries.
