USS John C. Stennis CVN-74 Leads U.S. Presence in Persian Gulf

Iran has been issuing tougher threats against the U.S. and Western allies over the imposition of tough trade sanctions meant to target its ability to export petroleum oil. On Tuesday, Iran stepped up those threats by warning of an attack on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier if it returns to the Persian Gulf.

The Associated Press reported the USS John C. Stennis, CVN-74, and its escort ships recently completed maneuvers in the Persian Gulf and sailed through the narrow Strait of Hormuz. Here's a look at the capabilities of the American Fifth Fleet:

    * The nuclear-powered USS John C. Stennis is a modern, high-tech aircraft carrier capable of defensive, offensive and tactical missions. According to the ship's official website, the Stennis is 1,092 feet long and carries more than 70 tactical aircraft from Carrier Wing 9.

    * In addition to tactical attack aircraft, the Stennis has three Phalanx close-in defense system, assorted missiles and the combined defense and offensive capabilities of its entire task force of support vessels.

    * The ship was constructed in 1995 at a cost of $3.5 billion and is designed to sail completely around the world without need of refueling. With a crew of more than 5,000 officers and enlisted men and women (including the airwing), the ship is virtually self-sufficient. Fuel, food and munitions are replenished at sea.

    * According to the Daily Mail, the Stennis and an escort vessel left the Persian Gulf last week, but continue routine patrols in the area. The Bahrain-based U.S. Fifth Fleet generally keeps one or more aircraft carriers in the vicinity at all times.

    * A Lahontan Valley News journalist travelling aboard the Stennis reported that the Bremerton, Wash.-based crew work in close cooperation with British and Australian navies to keep the Persian Gulf open and the Strait free for international navigation.

Three to five years after the Israeli Zionists get the Americans involved into another war with Iran which like Iraq and Afghanistan wars they will not provide a soldier or a dollar of their own the Americans should expect 20 dollar per gallon gas and long waits at the pump due to fuel shortages. Persian Gulf and most of the war zones will be an environmental catastrophe. Within the same period our national debt will triple and most banks will collapse, the military will be paroling your neighborhood smashing doors for anyone who opposes the government, the unemployment will be at 50 percent or higher and the military will be the only major employer, and food shortages due to high cost of energy, Since Iran is the first line of defense for Russia and China this situation will get a lot worse with the strong possibilities that Europe, Russia and China will get involved with the detonation of multiple nuclear warheads in all directions.

        A. We get very little oil from that region with the majority of it going to Europe and Asia (most of 'our oil' comes from ourselves, Canada, and Central America). We heard this song sung twice already...
        B. We've had to keep "the Israeli Zionists" at bay as they've wanted very badly to jump into some of these 'wars'.
        C. Very true is the fact that when a country uses force against the US they are left an enviromental disaster zone.
        D. War isn't directly as costly as you might think. Logistics are cheap by any means, but they aren't as expensive as you might think...and most other costs are already budgeted (we keep a standing Armed Force and necessary weaponry at all times). I wouldn't hold muy breath on the military state/high unemployment/food shortage thing if I were you. Nothing here to create that effect.
        E. Neither Russia nor China would fight to protect Iran as there is little to no benefit to them to do so. They are friendly with Iran because it is convenient for them to be (they getting something out of it). The ONLY possibility of a nuclear detonation from all of this is from Iran if they develop a weapon.

I am an American, as proud of my country as any person would be of theirs. I was in our military and know of some of its capabilities. We are mighty, we might lose one aircraft carrier in the event of attack but frankly, we have a bunch of them. Iran would litterally be pounded back into the stone age, destroyed into rubble, its people homeless and crying for their dead. For what I ask? Oil? World trade? To prove neither side will back down? War sucks, no matter who is in the right and in this case, prove to me who actually is? Neither side can afford the toll a conflict would bring, both in monetary losses and human loss. Its not the US's business to protect the world from every nation that has a gripe. Its not Irans place to tell anyone who can be in international waters but frankly, its not either governments place to put their people in harms way over such silly and fruitless reasons. The price of oil simply is not worth the sacrifice either nation would make. I for one would rather walk than to see our nations at war over this crap. The US has issues at home, pull out of all those coutries that do not want us there and come home, protect our own borders and spend our dollars here to keep us strong. Iran doesnt need us, want us or frankly, deserve us, they have nothing but oil to offer us. Its all about money, it always is regardless of what we are told. The world does not need a war to prove who is right. Our leaders would have us think its because of other reasons but anyone with half a brain knows its about keeping those oil dollars moving. Once again, the rich and powerful would offer up many lives to stay rich and powerful. What would happen? All those countries that hate the US would silently join in fighting us and where would it stop? Who would benefit? Who actually knows? War sucks. Thats been proven and in todays political climate, too many chiefs limit the ability of the Indians to fight and win. Thats been proven too. Do we want to kill over oil? I dont.

Constitutionally speaking it is the job of a strong Navy to protect America...Standing Armies are an abomination.
      • Al 4 mths ago
There is little constitutional about 'who' is charged with protection American. The Navy was considered the main source at the time because A. We didn't have airplanes back then and B. Our only threat serious would come from the sea.

There's more to it than this reporter even knows or the Iranians for that matter...I would think twice before even trying to mess with it but hey, it's your funeral.....go for it.

how ignorant. indeed china, Russia, Pakistan have no need for large naval unit. their coastline is not as big as US
      • Matthew 4 mths ago
Fakhry the US has a coast guard to protect the coastline. The Navy kicks a() everywhere else. Who is the ignorant one?

Iran has drawn a line in the sand.
It's up to America to cross it but I doubt they will anytime soon.

2007 2 Chinese sub emerged within striking range of the USS kitty Hawk, near the straits of Taiwan, evading an entire squadron of battleships, Aegis destroyers, Submarine hunters, and the 2 attack submarines accompanying it. Proving that the aircraft carrier is sunk a moments notice. The strait of Hormuz is a no go for American aircraft carriers with the 1,300 cruise missiles pointed at the coastline, America's only plan of action is to attack from the Persian Gulf, but it will simply not be enough to disable Iran's militarily and America do not know the level of sophistication Iranian anti ship and submarine warfare is at.

Takes a few well timed missiles to sink a 5 billion dollar behemoth, USA have never have to faced enemies with such capabilities till now :)
