Utah Man, Jaime Alvarado, Poses as Illegal Immigrant to Avoid Long Prison Term

An American citizen from Utah man who preferred deportation to jail pretended to be an illegal immigrant when he was charged with a drug offense, according to law-enforcement officials.

Jaime Alvarado, 27, of Salt Lake City, was deported to Mexico under an assumed name and identity rather than being sentenced to jail, but now his lie may be catching up with him.

Alvarado was charged Wednesday in Utah's 3rd District Court with giving false material statements, a felony, and giving false information to a peace officer, a misdemeanor, said Robert Stott, a spokesman for the Salt Lake City district attorney.

He did not show up for his court appearance, and there is a warrant out for his arrest, said a spokeswoman for the court.

Alvarado was arrested last year on a second-degree felony charge of possessing cocaine and heroin with intent to distribute, according to court records. Facing as much as 15 years in prison, he pleaded guilty and gave an alias, Saul Quiroz, and a fake birth date, and said he was an illegal immigrant. He was deported to Mexico.

But he returned to the U.S. in April 2010 using his valid U.S. passport, Stott said. He was re-arrested in Salt Lake City in February and turned over to immigration authorities.

Appearing in court that month, Alvarado revealed his true identity.

"He admitted he had created a false name in order to avoid a lengthy prison term," Stott said.

In a letter to the judge at the time, Alvarado asked for leniency.

"I know I made a poor choice by lying to you guys a year ago. I was afraid to go to prison," he wrote.

"I have a good job right now, a lot of little girls waiting for me and a family that will support me," he added. "It's my first offense and my last. I want to spend the rest of my life with my kids."

Another letter, from his fiancee, Anelia Carballo, said Alvarado had done "a 360-degree turnaround" and was a loving father to their daughter together and her other four girls.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released Alvarado in June once officials were satisfied that he was, in fact, a U.S. citizen, but a warrant was issued for his arrest on the false information charge on Oct. 31.

A spokeswoman for ICE said the agency was aware of the case and was investigating the matter.

let me get this straight. if u're an american citizen, u get a lengthy prison term, but if u're an illegal alien, the punishment is deportation back to mexico. is that right? wow!!!!!!! all the illegal aliens who commit felonies get deported and they come right back to commit more crimes. there is something seriously wrong with this country. it has a lot to do with the politicians.

This fits with a problem here in Texas. Collin County, one of the wealthiest counties in TX has 8 Law Enforcement Agencies serving it - bar far the largest number of law enforcement agencies per capital in the nation... Our biggest "Legal Problem" is with illegals - I was just assaulted by one two weeks ago and spent a day in the hospital as a result... All 8 Law Enforcement Agencies "Investigated" the crime (Painful Chuckle at the word "Investigated") and told me the exact same thing, "Yes, The assailant is illegal, Yes he and his son admit the assault, Yes we see the evidence of the assault at the scene, Yes we see your injuries, But we really cannot do anything in these cases unless we see it happen, personally. The time, manpower, and paperwork involved in processing an illegal is beyond what we can afford to devote to these things these days... And then, If we do, The ACLU gets involved, and the thing just drags on forever. It is just not worth it." My response, "Then why do we have 8 law enforcement agencies - seems like enough "manpower" to me to get rid of one dangerous illegal?" They had no answer for that one... So this guy has mastered "The System"! Do whatever you want criminally, Claim you are illegal, And never worry about it again - knowing the police will not bother you." Dirtbags all around!

I am sorry for your trouble. We live in Dallas county and I understand exactly where you're coming from. My ex was hit (and run) twice by Mexican drivers and the cops did absolutely nothing because, apparently, they had better things to do than to protect and serve American citizens. They actually were annoyed when my ex called to find out if anything was being done. As far as they were concerned, if she had uninsured driver coverage, the problem was solved, never mind out-of-pocket money she had to pay for deductibles. Is it any wonder illegal aliens are not afraid of breaking our law?

thats pretty much it. Just last week Arizona's biggest drug bust and they let an illegal alian out of jail in less than a week. only to have him going threw a school zone at fifty. then after they finaly caught him he had heroin and large amounts of money on him

its' so freaking true... if you are a legal citizen, you have to play by the rules and you will be punished to the fullest if you break them. But if you are illegal, you don't have to play by the rules and if you get arrested you get a get out of jail card for free! Plus free housing, food stamps, medical and cash jobs! Isn't american freaking great???

pretty smart move to pretend to be an illegal and get deported instead of 15 years in jail. But stupid to go back to the same city where he was arrested.

This should make people open their freeken eyes. If you get cought breaking the law in the US and your an eligal you get hot meals, a bed and a free ticket home. If your American and do the same crime, you go to prison for 15 years. Any one else see a problem here?

Undocumented immigrants collectively commit hundreds of thousands of crimes every year and get a slap on the hand for the most part while Americans are sent away to prison for the same crimes. This is not justice.

He should have stayed illegal. He would have been treated better.
    • Patricia  •  6 mths ago
kinda like the guy who robbed a bank so he could go to jail and get medical treatment... if you have some kind of connections south of the border (even though you're an American citizen), that could actually make sense
