Uterine Fibroids Cost Billions in U.S. Health Care, Lost Work: Report

TUESDAY, Dec. 20 (HealthDay News) -- Uterine fibroids are a significant economic drain on the U.S. health care system, costing anywhere from $5.9 billion to $34.4 billion a year, according to a new report.

The costs come largely from lost work and disability but also include medical treatment as well as obstetric complications, said the report, which appears in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

"Fibroids are one of the most costly conditions even at the lower limit of $5.1 billion, which is a considerable expense," said study senior author Dr. James Segars.

According to Segars, who is head of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility unit at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, uterine fibroids are one of the most common reproductive disorders in women, affecting about half of women before they reach menopause.

Fibroids -- which are benign tumors -- result in 30,000 myomectomies (removal of the fibroids) and 200,000 hysterectomies (complete removal of the uterus) among U.S. women each year.

Even women who don't have surgery often are hospitalized or require medications and other treatments. And the toll is especially high among pregnant women, according to the report.

Although other studies have estimated the costs of fibroids, none has included the cost of obstetric complications attributable to uterine fibroids, said Segars, who spoke at a Tuesday teleconference.

Looking at several sources of data, the study authors concluded that about half a million American women seek treatment for fibroids annually. That's about 1 percent of the nearly 64 million women who have fibroids.

Pregnancy-related costs of fibroids were estimated at $238 million to $7.7 billion a year.

The annual direct costs -- including surgery, hospitalization, medication and outpatient treatment -- ranged from $4.1 billion to $9.1 billion a year.

The largest contributor was lost work, which ranged from $1.5 billion to $17.2 billion a year.

"If one could minimize the number of women undergoing hysterectomies, we would be able to save 25 percent annually due to lost work," Segars said.

"These results emphasize the importance of developing new, effective treatments and earlier diagnosis for fibroids," he said.

#$%$ so women should suffer because of the cost of surgeries? it reduces fertility and quality of life. women get painful lengthy periods at times missing days of work anyway. isnt it better to try to fix the problem? I this article is stupid and had no point.

Lost work? Good grief! I bet the work got done and I bet most of the employees that took off took care of business before the time off. How dare anyone compare "Lost work" to a person's health!

UAE, or Uterine Artery Embolization is a relatively simple procedure using a small puncture in the femoral artery and x-rays, along with some other materials, to cut off the blood supply to uterine fibroids internally. Find a large hospital near where you live that has a decent sized Interventional Radiology department, or get your Ob/Gyn to refer you . It usually requires an overnight stay, but is a fraction of the cost of surgery, hospitalization, and recovery.

My friend just had that done 2 weeks ago and had MAJOR complications from the poceedure. She since been hospitalized for 5 days and has had a DNC & another proceedure to have the fibroids removed. Simple procedure my #$%$

While this procedure may work for some, it is not for everyone, especially women who also have extensive endometriosis and fibroids the size of six month old fetuses.

And anyone who ever dares poo-poo women missing work because of painful periods - may they experience it monthly for several years and then they wil understand.

Lots of unneccessary surgeries there. When I was 29, I was told by a grim faced OB/GYN that I had a fibroid that was contributing to my menstrual cramps. He said the only option was a hysterectomy. I was horrified and asked if I had cancer. He said no. I said I preferred to keep my uterus. He said since I did not want any more children that it was a useless lump of flesh. I said Well now, lets pretend you have a non cancerous lump on your testicles. Since you don't want anymore children, lets lop them off. He said No need to be hostile, Mrs. H. Now nearly 25 years later, the fibroid is still there and shrinking and my uterus is there too. No surgery, no time off work, no changes in my sex life and an absolutely normal menopause. Oh and a different OB/GYN who doesn't believe in going invasive just for profit.

I had had small fibroids for 3-4 years. I got ultrsounds every year to track them. In a 2 year span they grew aggressively. I dreaded every month, became depressed. Lost a lot of blood, took iron pills, gained 20 lbs. Ultimately , the GYN my medical Dr sent me to said...they are only gonna get bigger and need to come out. I needed to hear that to accept that I HAD to have the operation. I was 46, had never had surgery or anesthesia, was scared I was gonna die. Had the surgery (the fibroids had attached to my intestine and created a hernia, they weighed 18 lbs total !!), regained my quality of life and it's 6 years later. I don't miss that monthly ordeal at all and knowing what I know now, I'd do it again. After a certain age, the tissue also increases the risk of cancers.

Oh here we go another attack on woman's reproductive organs. But what about all the #$%$ money the insurance companies pay for viagra another meds so men can get an erection? Which is not needed to live a full life.

I had this problem and it was just awful. In 1993 I have the uterus removed and left the ovaries intact. Best decision I made. The doctor did not cut me open, he just apple cored the uterus out of the vagina passage.

I worked as a production supervisor for many years and had fibroids. Women have been having this problem for years, they should have found a cure or a way to stop the process so that women didn't have to get the surgery. They make it seem that we want to have this type of procedure done. I had to get the surgery because I had complications which caused me to lose time from work. It costs a lot less for preventions than surgery.

You obviously have not had to go through what many women go through - how callous of a comment.

Holistic cure... Neprinol. Stable in 30 days. Menopause results in shrinking fibroids and the symptoms fade.
Most women have fibroids and you do not have to remove your uterus. They can be controlled!
      • Dontblameme 5 mths ago
You are so wrong. Even if shrunken by medication, they will grow back and I for one was not going to wait 20 years until reaching menopause.
      • Unknown Soldier 5 mths ago
Dontblameme: I am only speaking from my personal experience. There are many options that you can explore with your doctor that were not available in the past. Everyone has a choice for whatever treatment works best for them.
You can google Neprinol to see peoples results. It is a Holistic approach that may not be right for you.

Lets get Congress to enact a LAW making fibroids illegal, then the problem is solved. Oh......, its is NOT the governments responsibility to pay the cost of treatment, except on the teat suckers on the Government dole. This article is just to stir the pot of discontent. Get over it.
