Utility: No power for some NY homes until Tuesday
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York utility says some Long Island residents won't get power until Tuesday even as thousands of linemen and tree trimmers work to restore power lines damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
About 130,000 homes and businesses remain without power, down from a peak of 1 million. Long Island Power Authority chief Michael Hervey said Saturday that power will be back on in 99 percent of those homes by Tuesday. That doesn't count buildings too damaged to get electricity.
There has been growing frustration about the pace of power restoration. Hundreds of residents protested Saturday outside a LIPA office. Two congressmen from Long Island have asked for federal aid to help LIPA restore electricity.
Harvey acknowledged residents' frustration but says the utility is working as fast as it can.
