Valentin Chmerkovskiy may not have landed in the top spot on the leaderboard with his celebrity partner, Kelly Monaco, on Monday's "Dancing with the Stars: All Stars," but he made headlines by stripping down to his briefs for his first number.
After the show, he told Access Hollywood that it was the "surfer" theme attached to their flamenco that led to the itty bitty costume.
"It was an edit that came last minute," he said. "I personally have a lot of respect for the genre and the culture of flamenco and paso doble and I didn't want to butcher that. I love the music and it really did feel [like we had] the surfer vibe. But, I didn't want to butcher it so we kind of kept that towards the end... to incorporate the surfer part of the flamenco [was], I guess, to live up to the challenge."
As for who actually came up with the idea, Kelly took credit.
"I'm like, 'Wouldn't it be a good idea if...' and then he was like, 'Yeah, let's do it,'" she explained.
"I was like, 'Tonight is my chance,'" the often-shirtless-on-the-dance-floor-Valentin added. "I just found it funny because I start the dance in a shirt and pants and then [at] the first break I take off my shirt. Second break, I take off my pants.
And Val had no problems exposing a little more than normal.
"It was fun," he continued. "People dream about the opportunities that we have being on live television, being able to do what we love and [be] able to have the freedom to be creative and do that. We came up with that. We did that and we put that together, and we [have] got the stage to share it with millions of people, so that's a blessing. I'm very lucky for that. Whether the judges approve of that or not, that's a blessing in its own right."
"Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars" continues with a double elimination on Tuesday night at 8/7c on ABC.
